It has everything to do with timing, which still freaks me out sometimes cause I'm so used to being able to stop at any point with colored pencils and then come back. With this wet stuff, I have to at least see through one area at a time before I can set it down for a break. That's how I'll get the even tones, work a section (like the underlying brown for the tree) all at once, so there's no edging from sections drying.
As for fading, its laying ink down at the darkest parts first, then dipping the brush in some water to then sort of.. drag out the color, causing the fade. There's also a lot of layering, so I'll do it a number of times and stop when the darkest area is as dark as I'd like it to be. Basically, its kind of like painting over the same picture a bunch of times. There's a lot of waiting involved too. To prevent muddiness and two areas bleeding together, I have to wait for the paper to dry completely between sections. If I don't wait (or have the wrong paper) crispness is lost.

She was so happy with it, she got a bit teary eyed :) It's in her room, on her bedside table so she can see it every day. It meant a lot to her to have HER picture drawn, she's liked your work since seeing the picture you drew for Atrayeus and for our anniversary ^.^
Thank you isn't enough for the joy you brought to her! She says "I need to find a dress like that!" now (because climbing a tree in dress shoes doesn't stress me out AT ALL as it is).
