Big Band Piece that I wrote while in USC in 2006.
I was blessed to have the "FireBreathers"( Members of the Henry Mancini orchestra... some of the musicians were the same musicians that played in the 80s PINKPANTHER theme music) Orchestra to play on my piece.
We recorded this at the Paramount Studios in Los Angeles (the same studio in which they have done numerous soundtracks including Star Trek (TOS:TNG: TMP:..etc)
Caravan Azul (Blue Caravan) has a Very long and sad/triumphant history for me. For me to Have this piece completed and performed was extremely heart-wrenching as I was able to close 1 chapter in my life.(If you ask me Ill be sure to tell you the long version of how this piece meant so much to me to compose)
Thank you Barbara "Sonny" Milo. For all the years that you bought me to the annual Brass Conference for Scholarships (1985-2005) Starting when I was like 11 years old.
This Jazz piece is dedicated to you Barbara. Thank you for these memories in which Ill *never* forget.
(note to Barbara - even though shell probably never ever find this on FA: below)
Can you hear the 20 years of B.C. influence on me in this piece? Too many people to name in the 20 years or the Brass Conference that have influenced me to compose this piece. All these Esteemed musicians Below, I have *met* an listened to at the Brass Conference:
Tito Puente, Bobby Sanabria, El "Chocolate", Dizzy Gillespie, The Manhattan School of Music Latin Jazz Big Band, Chuck Mangione, Rich Willey, too many to mention...etc etc etc...
*sighs*
Hey everyone!!
When I first wrote this at USC I was given the opportunity to score it to picture OR just compose it for the experience of Writing for BIG BAND. I Did it for the later (Ill tell you my saga of the BIGBAND story sometime)
BUT.... It turns out that my piece worked out perfectly for the introduction of the movie "HAVANA" starring Robert Redford.
If you want to see Blue Caravan in a Film Score setting , I invite you to check this out:

Ahh....music like this is a balm for the soul. Sadly a rather under-appreciated genre these days, although I grew up listening to pretty much all of the musicians you listed; I'm sure it was quite a trip to actually meet them!
Thank you for sharing; I needed something like this to listen to this morning. And thank Vixyyfox for helping to direct others here!

oh my gosh. .That was so overwhelming. Thank you soooo very much.
I have to agree with you about the BigBand being an under appreciated genre nowadays. It has such a close and personal place near my heart. Im so glad that there are those out there who still love and support this genre of Jazz today.
Special thanks to you and Vixyyfox for all these overwhelming replies

Wukka!! Insta-save, insta-fave, and insta-watch. (I'm running out of instas. :- ) )
Long time back, I played semi-pro horn, and I know real pro when I hear it. Smoooth
'n gooood.
And damn if the editing on the Havana clip isn't matched perfectly with the song. Yes,
Bunky, we are in pro country here.
If you've got more back catalog [than what's in gallery] that's accessible, rather like to
have a listen. Got a novel brewing, and Caravan also just flashed me on a dance scene
with my two MC's in a posh Latin San Francisco club. I like it. (How the $%^#& do
you write dance?)
And God club me into the ground so just tail's sticking up if I start fantasizing about an
animation project. Since that'd probably kill me.
(Whups, too late: Exactly what I'm flashing on. Gee, thanks. :- ) )

(PS: C64 rocks! Sorta cause it's archeological now, but still, rocks is rocks.)

As George Takei would say.... "OH MY!!!"
That was so overwhelming hun. Than you so much for the compliments! I really and truly humbled at your message to me.
That had a long history for me, (the development of Caravana Azul) and Its a sad one/triumphant one.
Ill have to post about the development of that soon.
I have some Ideas Kicking around for a Bigband piece #2 (who knows I may be able to use your Horn Prowace? What horn do you play?)
Are you an animator? DO you have some projects that I could check out? *ears perk up and her hybrid tail wags*
TY sooo much

Horn = trumpet, and might have been a career. But got seduced by university and Science! Then
my head exploded; so much for either career. :- /
Music and writing have common ground. Can well understand the work required. Results = Worth it.
Animation? We-ll, after a few hours of beating brains out thinking furry story, story, story, something
comes on the radio and POWIE!! It's instantaneous music-video-of-the-mind's eye time. I've nearly
spilled coffee; that dramatic.
A *fur* music vid, that is, and almost in 3-D. MTV'd be happy to put it into heavy rotation. Sometimes
my own characters, sometimes other people's, often about stories that haven't been written yet.
Curious talent fort a writer to have, no? If Caravan can do this too, I gotta take notice. Could be
moah where that came from. At the risk of the aforementioned novel turning into a screenplay
for a fur musical.
No joke: 'Miss You,' by the Rolling Stones, Bernal's Champagne and Sasha, and a lesbian strip
club/bar, have somehow gelled into something quite vivid and coherent, as music vids
go. And good.
Every time I hear the song. Powie again. And I'm not even trying hard. :- )
So no, not animator. But am laser-sharp interested in the possibilities re. turning fur stories into
genuinely serious visual work (and music's hellish important to that). The state of the art has
passed phenomenal and is closing in on gob-smacked astonishing. You seen how good
even ordinary Second Life has gotten? So who knows?
Don't think I'm up to something furry that can blow Grease away, but I do know Broadway
musicals from the inside (performed in a couple). I can see it; really can. So again,
who knows?
(Exits stage left, idly playing with knife, and humming: "...Fur is the word, is the word that you
heard, it's got gloss, it's got shiny...") *

* Gibb and Valli won't mind the mild rip, I hope. :- )

this is real nice... if i touch short. but i guess if it was written specifically for something then that can't be helped.
i'd have perhaps vamped the ending pedal bassline and and let the drum/percussion go nuts for a bit, maybe with a horn player too.
thanks a lot though! really really enjoyed this :) ... it's nice to see some more serious jazz music being made in the furry community.

It wasnt written for anything though. In school it was for the practice of writing for a bigband. I took I a lot more seriously because of the history that I have with m life and the Bigband aspect of my life and what It took for me to arrive at that piece (20 years).
So it was just a writing practice for everyone but more serious for me.
*BUT*.. If you look at my description .. you can see that after I wrote the piece, It turns out that It works *PURRRRRRFECTLY" for the opening of the movie HAVANA ;)
Somethings just work out really awesomely like that ;)

i only breezed over the description, i apologise... i just saw that it fit over the top of the video and my imagination led the rest of the way! ... bad kitty...
speaking of havana http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=35KT2leNa30 ... spelt differently, but who cares? ... amazing recording either way

a real trip it must be to get live players to play your compositions. It's an experience I am sorely lacking heh... though I have more sounds to work with on my DAW than I thought I'd ever have... and it'll never be enough lol there are always more, and amazing real players I wish I could have play my stuff.
But this was a real treat. I look forward to learning more about you and your music!

Ty so much DB.. Yes I was truly blessed to have these awesome players bring my piece alive. But now that Im all graduated getting a performance like this can be pretty tricky. I do have a bunch of sounds on my system here as well. Im tweaking a lot of stuff as we speak ;)
I look forward to more of your music as well. Like with your other piece that I commented on , I love the atmosphere that you created with your ocean/centered environment. Cool stuff!
