Well, since circumstances were what they were around the time of this picture and I had some obstacles, namely certain people and their bullshit distracting me from being fully available earlier this year, I'm going to give this the attention that it deserves now. Mainly because it is, and has been since it's creation, one of my favorite pictures you've done. It still holds up in that regard right now, too, and deserves some recognition for that, and it's unfortunate that I even wound UP in a situation where I couldn't comment/fav this particular picture and I want to make up for that now.
I mean I could give to you many reasons why I like this picture but I guess lets start with the subject matter. Ren is a real favorite of mine when it comes to your characters so there's no question that I always dig seeing more art of him. Especially in more expressive art since he's clearly suited for that sorta thing. His face is just to die for here and I really love his tired eyes. The sketchy lines REALLY add to the mood and I love how they bold toward the outside towards his muzzle. You don't usually do characters at this angle and you did a really great job of it anatomically and overall. Not to mention that shading is dark enough to give the picture depth and texture but not too dark to distract from the colors, which are an important part of the picture, at least in my mind.
What I like about this is how much it the color choice alone ADDS to the mood by contradicting it. You have your pastel colors, which generally DON'T fit a gloomy mood, but you mute them just enough for it to appear gray and fit Ren's disconsolate and longing expression. And yet even though I said the pastels, muted or not, don't fit the gloomy mood, the fact that they don't actually EMPHASIZES the mood of the picture even more, contributing something confusing and vaguely optimistic to an overall gloomy picture.
It really DOES come off exactly as it should visually, fitting the lyrics like a charm. Like, I wouldn't even have to SEE the lyrics and yet I'd still feel the same way about it. This isn't something a lot of people can accomplish, despite sounding so basic. You did a fantastic job with everything, honestly.
This to this day remains one of my favorite pictures by you and I'm sorry I never took the opportunity to elaborate on why and tell you exactly why I love it. It's frustrating that of all the pictures I didn't get a chance to comment on properly, it was a favorite, this one. That isn't fair to you, and it isn't fair to me, I sincerely apologize.
I will say I'm glad it was brought to my attention again so I could finally give it the respect it deserves. You SHOULD be proud of it, you've done great work like and pushed boundaries you hadn't prior. You have a LOT to be proud of.
