I've always loved these birds! *o* I first saw a real one a couple of years ago on a run (even though it was just a glimpse) and I wanted to draw or paint one for longer than I can remember. I took the opportunity here - this was an illustration to accompany an English project on how Henry David Thoreau uses birds in his work Walden and of course I needed to decide on a bird! Western Tanagers probably don't live in the eastern United States, but I went with this bird since the colors worked and it has personal significance to me.

I love watercolor more every time I use it! I do need help getting darker tones, though... it feels like this is the darkest I could get everything and then no matter how dry the paper was or how much paint I had on the brush, the colors didn't get darker...?
