Jake Barion, a nuclear engineer for a Ohio based nuclear power plant finds a issue with the reactor that he oversees. Despite his complaints, management refuses to do anything about it until the scheduled refueling outage due to cost issues of prematurely shutting a reactor down. When Jake refuses to power the reactor back up after initiating a emergency SCRAM due to a defect in the bulkhead of the pressurized water reactor, he's fired along with his best friend for insubordination.
When a major accident happens, he's called back to try and help in the situation, despite the big time radiological risks to his health.
