Zidaya the bard spends a lot of time roaming around old dungeons. During his travels he meets many strange creatures. Some are friendly, some not so much. One of the most infamous creatures one can find in those dark, gloomy places is the Mimic.
Mimics are creatures who possess the ability to disguise themselves as common ordinary containers such as barrels, kegs, cabinets, and treasure chests. When an unwary or too-curious explorer goes to investigate the Mimic springs to life and attempts to clamp down upon them with its massive jaws, like a Venus flytrap trying to catch a fly. Unless the explorer has quick reflexes death is almost instantaneous...if they're lucky.
Where this creatures come from, and whether they were a long dead wizards attempt at guarding their treasure or the result of magics effect upon natural evolution no one knows. Their origin is shrouded in the mists of time. What Zid does know is that not all Mimics are evil or mindless creatures. Some Mimics are more like stray dogs who have been long-abandoned by negligent masters.
Here we see Zid with one of the friendly sorts. The bard is currently trying to think of a name for his new found friend. Perhaps one of you could help him.

Japanese:Mogu-chewing, eating.
In Chinese it's the name of a traditional painting technique. Means 'boneless'. On paintings in the style of mogu, forms are made by ink and color washes rather than by outlines.
...I love it. Thank you! It's perfect. <3
Also, thank you for directing me to a webcomic I've never seen before!

I'll keep chester in mind. I have an idea...Zid runs a shelter for homeless Mimics. He has a mage assisting him-they're trying to 'breed out' bad magic/aggressive tendencies via magic & selective breeding. These things aren't natural, and have no real place in the ecosystem but if they can be domesticated...

Thanks. It's based on a costume I once wore to a ren fair. The idea behind these mimics is that magic users age magic items like one ages wine in casks. Toss it in, add some magic stuff, let sit for however long. over time stuff gets abandoned, monster DNA is absorbed, wood falls away, and the creatures gain sentience.
Eventually you end up with some good, some bad, some very bright dog intelligent, and some going dormant. Zid goes around rescuing the ones he doesn't have to put own due to their being 'evil' (tainted by black/evil magic), and then retrains/selectively breeds them. Eventually you end up with something akin to Terry Pratchett's 'luggage', where it's intelligent, and very loyal.

My friend VampireYuriGirl came up with the aged in barrels concept. Silver was in stream with me and something he said clicked in my head giving me the idea to make Zid sorta like my partners and I (we breed/show Ibizan hounds). This way even present time/future Zid gets to keep pet mimics (they make great roadies).
Went with Popful's suggestion-Mogu

Errol is delightful. I shall add it to the list of names (Zid breeds/shows mimics). Thank you!
