Another batch of sketch commissions for the very classy
York_Indayla
I was really excited when he gave me this most recent batch. There are a really cool collection of characters he asked me to draw. He is a dream customer, to be sure.
So, first up, we have Finis Bairn, or 'Elder Child.' Essentially, we're looking at a lich-esque creature with the mind of a child. I really liked the concept, of something grotesque, and at the same time beautiful. That said, I was provided with a reference pic, where a flower was being held. I wanted my sketch to focus on that same element.
Anyway, it was a fun draw. Enjoy.
Char belongs to owner, and art to me.

lol, you know, it walks a fine line for me. Given his lack of skin, around the mouth area... yeah, it looks like he's VERY into it. I mean, in general, I wanted it to feel like he's JUST admiring it, but y'know, I'm good with whatever vibe it looks like he's putting out, either way. The difficult in the ability for such facial features to properly portray expression adds to the delightful eireeness that draws me to the character to begin with.
If he had intact cheeks, I can tell he'd be giving the biggest smile. I can see you also appreciate the concept of morbid looking but ultimately benevolent characters.
I have a confession to make, these creatures were primarily inspired from a short comic I encountered long ago around 2000, sadly gone and forever. It's where a creature not so dissimilar from this one walked into a tavern, freaking everybody out. Turns out in the end all the monster wanted was a good beer.
I really wanted to save that comic, it says a lot when the design of that monster stuck with me for over a decade since.

I hear ya'. I'll have a character or two (Just woke up, so can't think of specifics, presently), that I'll be looking at an old comic or show or something, and think 'Oh yeah. That totally inspired this character.'
I DO remember there was this cartoon, based off a toy, called Mighty Max. I know there were a few monsters and such from there that influenced me.
Anyway, yeah, I like this character's concept. It was fun to draw.
