Midwest Furfest 2014: Holidays in the City
Refresh for slightly larger, possibly brighter version
Those of you who attended MFF will have a copy of this already - I had the honor of designing this year's conbook cover! I didn't know if it would be a faux pas to sneak a couple of my own characters in there, but I went ahead and did it anyway because I knew it would help boost my drive for the picture as a whole. And it worked - this is easily the largest, most complicated painting I've ever done. I can't remember exactly how long it took, but I think it was about four long days' work.
Anyway, the scene is inspired by Chicago's Christkindlmarket (which, alas, we didn't have time to go see for ourselves while we were there!). I used textures from CGtextures.com for the ground and the lighted windows, and I used a random street scene off Google to get the perspective right after several botched attempts to do it from scratch (I really need to practice that >.<), but the rest is all just painted in Photoshop using mostly the basic round brush and the Smudge tool.
Happy holidays, everyone! And Merry Christmas too XD
(Rori and Kia - the two girls at center right - are my characters, if you're wondering what I meant by that :P)

Thank you so much! And well done for paying attention to the weaselly fur color, you know your mustelid stuff ;3 Kia's fur is always dark brown - I read that only weasels living in northern climates change their fur to white for the winter, and they have to be pretty far north at that (some just change partway and get this really cool patchy effect which would be fun to play with in a character :3). I always imagine Kia and Rori (this probably shows a lack of imagination) living in about the same climate I do, which is a temperate one. I do also wonder, if the fur color change is temperature-dependent, what would happen if a weasel lived in a centrally-heated modern house... maybe none of them would turn white!
Hah, sorry for the ramble, I went on a bit of a tangent there XD

I think "hoooooolyyyy....." is the best reaction here. I mean, GAH. Tons of work and the result is off the scale.
Sure, use textures, but here you use them WELL and it's still a ton of work to integrate them in a way that they're there but unobtrusive. Just... wow.
Rori seems to be all wide-eyed kid looking at everything. Kia seems to be trying to spot the next stall with beer. :x)

For someone who's never been to the market, you captured the ambience surprisingly well! Only thing missing is the stalls of german carving toys and the smell of cheap apple cider and the crunch of sand under your boots (salt stains the stalls). I... is that cider or coffee?
And kudos for your sore drawing hand.

It's really an awesome piece and one of my favorite pictures here on FA. I can't image how many hours you spend on this piece when i look at all the details :>
Also Rori is a real cutie, i love the strands and the fur detail
I really have to get a piece from you at some time ^^

Can I just tell you that this is amazing, I have been looking through your gallery and gushing over everything you've done and this right here makes me smile. I love the holidays and seeing given it's from 2014 this is just, there are no words. The details are amazing same with the expressions.
