Dream of Gabriel
"There is Gabriel, the angel of revelation, with six pinions, each composed of one hundred smaller wings; he is covered with saffron hairs; between his eyes is a sun, and between every two hairs of his body a moon and stars. Every day he dives three hundred and sixty times into the Sea of Light, and every drop of water from his wings creates a spiritual angel (Ruhaniyun) in his likeness."
-- R.O. Winstedt, "Shaman, Saiva and Sufi."
Done pixel-by-pixel, in PhotoShop CS2. I would probably try animating something in this style in the future, with more free time. >_>

Dang, son, this is pretty impressive work. Sometimes I feel like obsessive pixel art is kind of masochistic/masturbatory, but you've really put the medium to work here. This wouldn't have worked any other way, and the forms make sense and are interesting at the same time. Very cool stuff!
Pixel art in the sense of sprites -- where you zoom out from it to see if it looks good in display scale, then put dots in where needed -- seem to me more like drawing with limited colours and size, and in discrete packets, rather than an actual exploration of pixel manipulation. In this one, I attempted to make pixel art that "grew" like a plant from a single point (it started on the "neck").
When I do intricate stuff like this (see also the background) it's actually almost therapeutic, like making mandalas.
pyurio has mentioned to me that this reminded him of Kufi calligraphy, which I was probably picking up from, subconsciously.
Thanks for the words! =D

Wow, it does look amazingly like kufi calligraphy. Your art always gives me a breath of fresh air and a sense of awe <3
It might have been unintentional, but I love that when you scroll up and down, it seems to temporarily glow with yellow light.
Also, I have a feeling I need a list of books from you that I should read for my spiritual/mental growth.

I can't remember what it's called, but that optical effect might be because of the contrast between the near-black pixels and the light background. Like looking at a red wall too long and everything ends up looking green-tinted?
