Tamashii (魂), the world Kuu lives in is a mix of modern and old Japan. The world Yokai lie hidden in plain sight as they hide among humans. Some areas in Tamashii are friendly to yokai but there are a few cities that hold denizens that hate yokai and hold laws against them. While most in the world accept yokai, there are some who would kill them on sight or worse torture them.

She is the only daughter of the Head of her clan, and is the heir even though she is adopted. Kuu currently attends high school with a disguise magic made by her tanuki clan members to appear human. The town bans all yokai yet there seems to be a high presence of evil yokai and humans in this area. In order to one day take over as head of her clan, she must investigate why this down draws evil. The high schools seems to have the highest activity of malicious spirits.

Kuu also has a berserk "monster" form that lashes out if her life is in danger and cannot control how she acts when transformed.

Kuu has now regained memory from when she was human before dying and changing into a yokai.

After slowly trusting Aubrey Solock, she learns he was the cause of her human death. Her rage and suppressed Hikiko-san resurfaces, altering her appearance. Aubrey, cuts her tails in a successful attempt to seal her powers.

If she becomes and/or is around people that are enraged or depressed her tails regenerate and if she does not cut them, she loses control of herself.

Her and Aubrey now have a serve hindrance in their relationship after finding out he his a Yosei and also the cause of her death, thus in turn the "reason she because a monster".
