Finished version of the commission for Amethystine featuring Ace Prion, the blue shark in the pool, the seemingly puzzled arachnid, Arach Ned and Amethystine the amethystine python leading the discussion.
If I had to sum this picture in one word, that word would be...scales. Oh so many, many scales. And I thought the detail on Ned's abdomen would be the most time intensive part. Or the water in Ace's pool which I'm still pleased and amazed by looking at it today. But oh the scales. Still, I'm glad I went and worked and reworked the scale pattern refining it a bit smaller each time. that sure helped in trying to somewhat follow the amethystine python's natural patterning. While I'm happy with how Amethystine turned out here, I'm grateful to myself for not putting all of those scales on Evelyn.

Thank you.
Actually I worked on the scales over a period of several days so it really wasn't as intense as it would appear. It helped that I didn't have a real deadline either so that pressure wasn't there. With those couple of things in mind, these scales weren't anywhere near as difficult as an Oriental rug that I have to have done in less than an hour at work.

Everyone's talking about Amethystine's scales, and they ARE awesome, but no one seems interested in Ned and his extraordinary abdomen patterning. And yeah, the water effects are super sweet, too.
You already know I love it, but I'm going to announce it to the world that: I LOVE THIS PICTURE!
We all do!

Thank you. I used a mechanical pencil with 0.5 HB lead on card stock. The card stock actually shades pretty well and smudges nicely with just a bit of rubbing to smooth out some of the shading lines that look a bit too harsh. It erases pretty decently with a vinyl eraser too.
Hehe, I just noticed that the 'Expendable' and the red shirt in your icon. Your expression is most fitting as well. You only need a vampire cloud or Gorn in the background to really give that doomed feeling. Where did you get it from?

oh wow! maybe i should just try card stock then, i can't seem to get very nice results with pencil shading. then again fairly moot point i guess as i rarely do much pencil shading anyway...
haha, i know right? X) i'm trying to collect some "expendable"-themed badges now, i'm such a nerd... I just drew it for myself on the art-based blog site Tegaki, then fixed it up a bit in Photoshop as the background colour on the original is way too light.

I work almost exclusively in pencil, either graphite or colored, so I"m really good with them. Put a tablet stylus in my hand and I could barely play a game of hangman let alone draw anything.
A very cute icon. You could probably make some money drawing icons like this for people. Maybe use 'Essential' for the command crew as hardly any of them ever bought the farm and 'Logical' or 'I'm a doctor...' for the science blue division. And if you want real nerd, I just had an idea for an "I'm a doctor..." picture with Doctor Who instead of Dr. McCoy.

it took me probably like two years to even realize really what the hell I'm doing with my tablet. it's still hard. i like pencil better, but alas my scanner's broken so if i want to show anything it's digital now anyway. :P
thank you!! I might try later, if I work up any confidence for the icons. as it is now I'd probably do some just for fun for friends anyhow. (so, uh .. who's YOUR favourite character? haha)

Oooh, that sucks. I'd be dead without my scanner.
This icon certainly looks good and better than some I've seen or made myself. Hmm, favorite character...that's a tough call especially with the classic crew, though I believe I've always been partial to Mr. Spock. I can still remember back to the opening night of the Wrath of Khan back in 1982. I hadn't heard any of the rumors that Mr. Spock was going to die in the end and took it a bit harder than I probably should have. In my defense, there was no guarantee of a Star Trek III but I'd felt somehow like I'd lost a friend. Spock used to make science seem pretty cool.

Thank you though
amethystine is the one to thank for the characters. I just drew them as best I could.
