Plumechien
[Pluum-shion]Culture Overview
Plumechien, or Feathered Hounds, are a sapient species that very rarely live in urban areas, preferring wide open spaces. As such they tend to, as a culture, not use many manufactured items unless they happen to be more convenient or they 'appropriate' them from travelers. Their preferred habitats are suspended off the ground and are commonly variants of tree houses or ocean-side cliff structures which are often carved into and out of the very structures they're living in.
Diet:
The diet of Plumechien consists of most wild fruits and vegetables, as well as red meats. Cooking, while rare, sometimes occurs when it comes to food preparation. The most commonly 'favorite' foods of this species are pineapple and red meat.
Physical Traits:
As their name implies, Plumechien are covered in feathers instead of fur, and while most of their plumage is for show, their 'tail' feather is prehensile and can be flexed freely, even being strong enough to support the weight of the Plumechien itself if hung from. They also cannot fly, but they are extremely adept gliders and climbers. With their canid noses, they also have a very good sense of smell.
The average height and weight of a male Plumechin is 4'5-5'6" and 90-110 lbs and the female is 4'-5'2" and 70-100lbs. As with birds, their bones are hollow, making their bodies brittle if hit by extreme force, but allowing them to stay airborne longer when gliding from place to place.
Magic:
Plumechien are prone to small types of magic, though rarely those are born with larger inclinations towards it. For the most part, magic will display itself in such ways as super accurate fortune telling, healing inclinations, extremely good at growing plants, and other such 'useful' magics that are non-specific elementally based.
In 1 out of every 20,000 Plumechien born there will be such that have higher affinities towards the influence of the tides of the ocean, heat, the movement of tectonic plates, and other such 'higher' elemental and astrological magics. There are significant physical signs of this - not all positive - and it can take a toll on the user.
**Plumechien who have these unusual levels of magic are called 'Elementals' and are labelled as such from the get go with their unusual physical traits! You are NOT allowed to turn any Plumechien you've obtained that wasn't specifically labelled as one into one!
Gender and Reproduction
Physically, Plumechien exhibit no sexual dimorphism between male and female. Culturally, any sexual 'parts' are reserved (mostly) for reproducing and thus the gender spectrum is all over the place, with any stated gender ('mommy, I'm a girl not a boy') by any given member being respected. Because of this, a Plumechien may be bound to one partner, but reproduce with another with no stigma and all parties (Biological parents and their partners if they exist) helping raise a litter.
A Plumechien litter consists of anywhere from 1 to 3 children with a gestation of 7 months, though larger litters have been documented.
Life Cycle
After their 7 month gestation, a newborn Plumechien, called fawns, will spend roughly the first two weeks of their lives with their eyes shut. At about a month and a half they are walking around on all fours and by 6 months have mastered walking on their hind legs.
Despite this quick start to life, they aren't considered sexually mature until they are 15 years old. Depending on their preferred life choices, young Plumechien will learn to take care of young, hunt, build tools, carve habitats, and other such tasks until they pick their niche after they hit maturity. Whether or not a Plumechien takes a mate and has children is their own prerogative and there is no shame in taking a partner immediately, waiting, or even never taking one at all!
The average Plumechien lives a comfortable 150 years and is able to reproduce their whole lives, though most stop in their mid 100s simply because it is considered irresponsible to purposely have a child you can't raise into adulthood.
