Poached Egg "Ina-Mug" (on toast)
Okay, wuffy is the first to admit that this is more a technique than a recipe. But, after thinking of the cost of fast foods, and "got no time for that" excuses out there, wuff thought he'd put this out there for folks looking the get something hot, tasty, economical, and fast under their belt for breakfast.
Vrghr made these in his office this morning, for his own breakfast. "Equipment" needed was a coffee mug, microwave oven, and a toaster. Total time was under 5 minutes. And it was FAR cheaper than grabbing something from a fast food joint on the way to work!
Price breakdown:
Eggs: 1 Doz @ $1.38 - 3.99 (12c to 25c ea)
Bread: Loaf sandwich @ $1.18 - 2.49 (3c to 6c ea)
Butter: ~8c (depending on how much you spread)
Cheese: 1 slice (~14c) (brands & price per slice vary wildly)
Misc: ~3c
TOTAL: $.40 - $.58
Price of a McD's "Biscuit Egg & Cheese" = $2.49 (http://foodservices.appstate.edu/di.....al-restaurants)
Even if you want to add 2 strips of pre-cooked bacon (about the highest cost per strip of bacon you can get), those are only a quarter a piece. Total price (~$1) is still less than half what you can buy it for, fast food style!!
So lets run this down: less that 5 minutes time. ~50cents cost. Hot, tasty, made to your tastes. Why wouldn't you? Unless, of course, you're just not a fan of poached eggs!
So, how do we do this?
Ingredients:
~ 1/2 COLD water
1 egg (per serving)
1 slice toast (per serving)
1/2 - 1 slice single slice of cheese
butter ~2 tsp (to spread on toast)
salt & pepper to taste
Directions:
Fill a (preferably clear) coffee mug a bit less than half full of COLD water. Note, use it cold out of the faucet!
If you are not familiar with doing this in the microwave oven you're about to use, selecting a clear mug will let you watch the egg solidify as the oven runs, so you'll have a much better idea how long you need to let that particular oven run!
You can substitute an "Irish coffee" mug, an "old fashion" tumbler, or even an "on the rocks" style bar glass. The water won't get hot enough to damage those. Even a small juice or water glass will work.
Crack the egg into the cold water.
Put the egg into the microwave. Don't worry about puncturing the yolk or any of that nonsense - the water "buffers" the egg so no risk of explosions here! Woot!
Cook!
A 1000W microwave will need ~55 seconds, depending on the amount of water in the cup and your preferred "done-ness"
Vrghr's puny 750W work microwave needed ~ 2min, 15 seconds to get this right.
Wuffy likes his poached eggs with the whites firm, and the yolks still runny. Your taste, of course, may be different!
While the egg is cooking, butter your toast. If desired, lay a bit of cheese over it.
Using the back side of your fork to block the egg by making a "wall" across the top, pour the hot water off the egg into a sink, leaving the egg behind. Gently pour out your poached egg onto your buttered toast.
Salt and pepper to taste! Devour!
Microwaves are all different. And the amount of water in your mug can also affect the speed of cooking. Wuff has cooked two eggs at a time in his, and one invariably turns out perfect while the other still has much too runny whites. Just pull out the " good" one and run the oven another 10-20 seconds at a time, until the remaining egg reaches your desired firmness.
Once again, this really wasn't intended to be a "recipe". This is just more a "how to", and a bit of a study on saving some of those hard-earned $$s for hungry furs!
Bon Appetite!

*grins* Luckily, these are super-fast to make! So wuff can keep the eggs comin' at ya until you're satisfied (or you explode, which ever happens first *giggles*).
Vrghr's earlier "omlet Ina-Mug" (here: http://www.furaffinity.net/view/14292588/) also goes REALLY well on toast! WUff has made a lovely bacon & egg toasted sandwich with it for lunch here at the office. Just sliding the omelet out of the mug, slicing it in half, and opening it up onto the toast. Then covering that with a couple strips of the "pre-cooked, heat and serve" bacon in our fridge, and wuff had a WONDERFUL meal!
Took almost 5 minutes! WOOT!
(Big secret - Vrghr has been "practicing" his microwave-poached eggs to use for the Irish Eggs Benedict to come on St Patrick's Day)

Thank you! Those little clay pots did look interesting - kinda like a take on a traditional Tagine cookpot. Might need a bit of spritz with some cooking spray to get it to release easier. Perhaps. Wuff not altogether sure there.
Thank you muchly - really makes wuff happy to hear his posts and recipes have been helpful! Keep cooking, and bon appetite!

*LAUGHS* Oh yea! Foxes and their eggs! Like otters and their fishes! *giggles*
Wuffy is a lover of eggs too. Perhaps there was a wee bit of fox sneaked into the wolf somewhere in Vrghr's past? *chuckles*
Wuffy might see if he can do a baked or "shirred" eggs (aka "Oeufs en Cocotte" if you want to be fancy! *grins*) next! We have a little, wimpy toaster oven at work. It should do the job, if wuffy can find some small oven-proof bowls that will fit in it.
Those baked eggs are pretty near "dead simple" to make too.
- Find a small oven-proof dish (like one for creme brule desserts).
- Butter the sides and bottom.
- If you want something to go with the egg, put a little layer in the bottom (a slice of Canadian bacon, some sautéed mushrooms, some caramelized onions, or a scoop of sour cream and chives - any of those are nice).
- Gently crack an egg into the dish/bowl
- Float a couple teaspoons of milk, half & half, cream, etc., on top of the egg. (If you're not sure you can do that successfully, just bake the eggs for about 5 minutes to get them to start setting up, take them out, THEN float the liquid on top - it'll work fine!!)
- Bake the eggs at ~375-400 degrees until the whites are set but the yolks are still runny (~15-20 minutes, depending on your oven)
- Garnish or top as desired (chopped chives, paprika, tarragon, a sprinkle of cheese, etc)
- Serve with toast!
Takes about 4 minutes of work, then come back when the eggs are done baking. Simple, but Oo La La! *grins*

Yumm! You're just 1 step away from "Eggs Benedict", just drizzle a bit of Hollandaise sauce atop it and you're there! *grins* Sounds like a delightful meal!
Vrghr is going to do an "Irish Fusion" version of those for his office buddies on St Patrick's Day, for our monthly Office Breakfast gathering.
Substitute Irish "Boxty" patties for the muffin, wuff's own Corned Beef Hash for the ham, and put the poached egg and sauce atop that! Should be YUM! Might fry up some mushrooms and tomato wedges to roll a bit more of the "Irish Breakfast" feeling into it all.
Will definitely be posting the results of that up here on FA!

I usually use a 1000w microwave on power 600w or 700w for longer (about 2 min 30 seconds) rather than at full power...this lets the egg cook somewhat more evenly and not over cook it. I also use a ceramic bowl that has been rubbed with a little butter or sprayed with cooking spray instead of water.
For an added treat beat two eggs with 30 ml of milk, put into a greased ceramic bowl, cook for 1 min on power 600w, use a fork to break up the cooked egg and add a little sprinkle of grated cheese, tiny ham or bacon pieces or any other yummy you want (tomato, spinach, leftover veg whatever) Cook on power 600 for a further 1min 30 sec or until your egg is done to your liking. Yummy cheap scramble. Add salt and pepper if desired.
Another one is mix two eggs with salt, pepper, 1 -2 tsp soy or terriyaki sauce and 1-2 tsp sugar/sweetner; put into a greased bowl. Zap for 2min for each egg used on power 600w or until desired doneness has been attained. Tomago yaki.
More eggs just use a bigger bowl.
I just got myself one of these Rollie egg master things the other day and I love it. http://geekologie.com/2013/03/27/ro.....egg-cooker.jpg

*grins* Very good tips for this!
Wuff used to do the "waterless" version. Running at lower power reduces the risk of explosions there. But adding the water ensures it. And the water gives a more "poached" flavor to wuffy's taste, while the waterless tilts it more toward a gentle "sunny side up" style. All are VERY good!
The "omelet ina mug" here (http://www.furaffinity.net/view/14292588/) is almost exactly as you described for the whipped version. It is SO yummy! Vrghr just make a LOVELY scrambled egg sandwich with a couple slices of pre-cooked bacon, reheated, two slices of toast, a slice of "singles" Kraft cheese, and a softly-cooked version of the "omlete ina mug" with some 3-blend cheese, mushrooms, salt & pepper, and a dash of cream all whipped up together. It is SOOOOO yummy! And quite filling too! It also looks very impressive with that thick center of fluffy eggs!
Wuff is definitely going to have to try the soy/teriyaki version of the Tomago Yaki! Sounds like a new treat!
THANK YOU!

Hooray! Wow! This wuff is thrilled that his little tips here have had such success! Wuff gonna be bouncy all weekend over this! *grins*
Bon Appetitie! And a "Hiya there!" to Wanda as well! Vrghr's happy to have had a paw in her breakfast treat! *grins*
PS: Be on the lookout for wuff's next offering - thinking of doing some "Hawaiian Inspired" fried rice, featuring pineapple, bacon, spam, and various other goodies. *grins*
