*This will sit in scraps and be used as a more thorough reference guide, and will need proper fleshing out to look more pleasing to the eye*
Looks:
- Skull on the head is a human skull
- Ears are attached by fur that runs up the sides and/or back of the skull (they are placed strangely on purpose! Exact position does not matter!)
- Pointed ears (they do not flip flop much)
- Hands are humanoid, though may appear more monstrous (even hairless)
- Digitigrade OR Plantigrade legs (preference towards Digitigrade)
- There are indeed foot-pads (they may be colored using the ear palette)
- Overall body fur is normally fluffy/long
- I suppose this creature is most similar to a werewolf
- Stereotypical husky tail (curly, long-ish, long fur)
Misc;
Body type and gender are modifiable.
More than one Skullpup exists. There are many of them, and they come in different shapes and sizes whilst retaining near identical traits.
They are not dead, and they are not alive. They exist outside the cycle.
Ghost goop is optional, blood is red, sky is blue.

I have some rules written out for them should one come into contact with another and their multitude of personalities when it comes to contact with others, including the not-so-friendly approaches, but I need to make sure I don't go TOO elaborate.. I want them to be simple creatures.

well let me know when you do, I'd love to read about them
My own character's got a huge ass backstory and a ton of secret details about him (one huge one in particular) but I don't want to shine TOO much light on it until I start collecting masterful illustrations depicting said secrets

also I recently made a statement on twitter revealing some minorish secrets but then revealing there's more

The Skullpups exist by non-scientific means, so they definitely fall under the "magic" category, but they exist in a world where the general consensus of civilized tribes immediately reject any creature that shows signs or symbols of undeath/necromancy, though they'd be incredibly rare sights to see.
I've always had a deep love for a universe with magic, albeit limited, but in a more medieval setting. I'd consider firearms to be pretty good at chipping bone.
Hhh... Must study Clydey more.

Guns are intimidating
Knives are personal
and Hand2Hand is just plain love
I have a deep love for magic as well, but even in universes with magic in them I always believe there's a scientific or a logical procedure as to the mechanics of magic, laws and etc.
Specifically with my character's universe, a few perversions of science and technological advancements have progressed to the point where they seemingly "appear" to be magic, but to his disdain, they're still not. So even in a crossover of worlds he'd reason that there's a scientific, no matter how organic or bizarre, method to why something is the way it is, and hopes to find something explainable someday, a "miracle".
But I'm getting ahead of myself, those are really minute details to the greater picture that is my character
but that's what his thoughts and experiences are about the subject.
if asked he'd say "I'd give it all up if I could be a wizard" something silly he'd think is impossible anyway.
but oh boy, I love the subject of undeath and necromancy, which is something that is tangable in my guy's universe, though scientifically explained.

The bone heads are all adept at some form of unarmed fighting. They are all fueled by violence and conflict in various forms and levels, amongst other things, so that goes along with a trait they all share.
As for how magic works, it always has to have a source for its power, as well as a conduit to unleash said raw energy in another form. Never "and then it was there, from nothing", besides appearing on the outside that it was from thin air.
I feel that necromancy in a more modern setting would deal more with giving an otherwise inanimate object the illusion of "life" by making it animate through controlled energy.. which is more like complex engineering that has to do with dead bodies. Does your world have any sorts of supernatural-esque forces, such as spirits?
Hhh there is so much I could share on Skullpups, but I feel like if I am not adding them now, I don't want the notes to appear in my comments section as well

I can see necromancy being sort of an advanced form of telekenetic puppetry, which could be applied in theory then to more than just corpses (unless of course the energy needs to course through pre-existing channels like organs and veins and muscles, in which case it works differently and only through bodies) But generally Necromancy is the age old question of "resurrection?" or "will it bring the original soul back from the dead?" of which is usually the reasoning behind the original noble quest of necromancers. others of course thinking it ties to immortality and power.
Hmmmmm I've been mulling that one over in my head. Surely there is "technology" probably advanced enough that it could enable someone to not only astralproject, but to manifest themself into a tangible physical energy.
And it begs the question if "supernatural" isn't already a natural occurrence that we ourselves can't wrap our heads around as of yet, whether spirits can exist or not in reality.
I would have to say "yes" it does, both mechanically and organically(natural), but it would be to the point that it was literally a super NATURAL event that could be explained more by scientific rules (because science has grossly advanced in its knowledge further in his universe than it should) than on the principles of organic magic.
Which, his whole world is really philosophical question after question, to which I think at some point "magic" is really more of a perception and belief, than perhaps something that's actually legitimate.
"magic" is kinda a label given to the supernaturally unexplained, but in a world where everything can be explained it seems it would be harder to define what magic really is then.

That is a whole lot of information to process, but I am definitely liking this world you've created quite a lot. I always strive for simpler ideas, which is why I like more medieval settings, but I wonder what these pups would be like if they had a bit of technology assisting them with their personal agendas..? The sort of carnage they would make with no fear of risking their own lives.. Ahh you're making me consider more modern settings with these guys!
Magic will forever be largely unexplainable in my world, as a thing that is such a vast and complex concept that mortals spend entire lifetimes trying to study and theorize how it functions with the nearly infinite possibilities to expanding basic technology... and all of the risks that come with holding so much power.
We are in a world of magic!

see and that's the funny setting of my world. At one point everything WAS magical and mysterious
but due to several "Artifacts" early man and beast discovered, and spent centuries and even whole species cycles trying to crack, they basically are eventually able to break the code of knowledge on these things, and from them build a scientific bastardization of various other scientific discoveries from them.
Because of these weird "artifacts", ancient man and beast Develop way too fast for their own good, and in current modern times, are stuck in a point where there is the influence of knowledge greater than the evolution of the current creatures on the planet, and thus war, violence, and corruption are a lot more prominent in this universe to fight for the power of the knowledge that boarderlines GODS and MAGIC itself.
That's the world I created. So the world is under extreme stress and chaos with the burden of this knowledge that was introduced way too early.
My character has great involvement with the current development of this world, but NOW I am getting to the point where I'll shut up, because I'll be revealing too much before the show begins.

I think the existence of your creatures is plausible and probably explainable, if taken the time.
But I think in your current world setting it doesn't need to matter because hardly anyone could understand or grasp it in the first place, and to them it's mysterious and "magic"
so I think it totally works for you, the anonymity of your characters' existence. You could always explain it later, but it's not a necessity in my opinion

I am not too developed in writing and it's a miracle I can speak English (as my only language, forgot how to francais), but I love having the whole mystery behind everything, even if <I> don't have the answer to it (yet). I like explorers, adventurers, travelling is slower paced, and cultures are separated or isolated from each other.
The age where information is invaluable, though also difficult to discern how truthful it may be, which leads to wild tales and unexplained rumors..
The age where the forces of nature are more likely to kill you than someone in your own town.
The age where there is so much uncharted land!
So many things to play with!

well you're grasp of english and understanding is really terrific, even if you don't think so.
I wouldn't worry too much, it would be great to think about them and how they are, but I think as it stands the period they exist in allows there to be room not to know.
I love all that stuff too, the isolated, unexplored, set back kind of setting where everything's a lot more difficult to manage. I actually used to play D&D pretty religiously, and I had made up to 4 Story Arcs/ Series/ Campaigns that were all within the same world but separated by Jumps of time.
Which weirdly seem to play off metaphorical seasons: the first ever being spring feeling, everything's new, exciting and unexplored: the summery second one, Everything's bright and full of hope and good and Just as the age of understanding and evolution occur of societies: The age of Fall, things begin to set, mature, become darker and shrouded in the notion that a terrible Winter, or end of seasons (everything) will come: and Finally the last campaign, Winter, The end, the symbolic season of death, and one of the Darkest campaigns I've ever written and experience, showing how throughout the years what once was simple and good has slowly declined into terrible darkness and overdevelopment.
I suggest getting into pathfinder BUT MORESO D&D with a good, and thoughtful group, and coming up with your own fleshed out world like I did.
I actually have 2 characters from the world I drew and commissioned on here on FA
1 is Sol from the Summery Campaign (main hero)

and 1 is a custom Race of Seamonkeys called Artemiapes I named Qitblitzigen

I am immensely flattered, but I do not think my skills are still up to par for even the most basic of writing for campaigns.
All of your ideas sound so darn neat and elaborate.. I wish I had more local friends interested in D&D!!! I mean, just look how HANDSOME your characters are!!

I'm getting super meta and deep into this but I mean I think what would qualify as "magic" to my character is
Either a natural organic force based on its own laws and principles not influenced by any outside mechanical or technological "man-made" force, or one that goes even further beyond their worlds' current understanding of science, making it currently explainable, thus coining it as "magic"
Something like sorcerer alchemy, changing a base element into another, conjuration (both of elements and of physical objects or creatures), Destiny or fate dealing magic, really out of the box god-like magics you know.
I think if something outstanding like these were to exist, if a god-like state of existence were plausible, he'd believe and it'd change his view on a lot of things

// n\\ I am embarrassed to say my world is not developed that far into the laws of how it functions as a whole when it comes to the different sorts of magic being used, since I haven't made enough time to just sit down, research other sources for ideas, and to get a stronger grasp of how I want it to develop knowing that these extremely powerful forces exist.
Hell, I haven't even decided if very basic firearms or gunpowder explosives will even be a thing. I really wanted to get into Pathfinder or DnD so I can play with a pre-built world before I went super into details with my own.
The Skullpups can fit into any world that allows anomalies to exist, or maybe something that could pull a creature from an entirely different universe (that's kind of extreme, but you know). I can not explain how they exist just yet, since that's stuff I'd like to flesh out above. But there are a lot of them, and I'd consider them fairly expendable.

but yes, I would definitely agree supernatural forces to an extent do exist, though I think popping in and out of tangible to insubstantial is probably inprobable. Can a spirit manifest itself into a visible energy of representation, and plausibly influence physical objects?
yes.
Can it Conjure itself into a fully physical being? no. That would imply it's able to CONJURE physical matter from nothing, or convert pure energy into physical matter, which ties into ALCHEMY, which then would prove magic and god-like powers exist.

if you can think of other god-like powers to list please feel free
but I really think I hit the nail on the head with unexplainables like Alchemy and Conjuration
Fate & Destiny magic implying you could control someone's outcome, predestine the future to a guaranteed outcome.
all of which I think are the only unexplainable kinds of magic.

there's actually an "artifact" in my character's world that manipulates time. It can Slow down time selectively, even down to a cellular personal level, allowing the wielder to age a lot slower.
But there are rules to it.
You can't go "backwards" and you can't "completely" stop time. instead you slow it down to the slowest of frame movements.
This thing's pretty cool because it conceptualizes what time and space really is, and I describe near 0 speed as "an array of infinitely bouncing lights off of absorbing surfaces." You literally can see the speed of light rays at such low speeds.
HOWEVER, the lower the speed and timeframe, the more likely the wielder will receive physical damage while moving in this, because imagine they are walking AGAINST the air, against the air's particles, causing friction, and subsequently igniting the air on fire and oxidizing themselves (fascinating concept)
I love theories, love them to death and I like thinking about stuff like this. That's why my character and their depressingly logical world fits me to the letter.
If it was possible to go back into time, I'd probably consider that magic too, tying in with fate and destiny magic, the attempt to change an already set outcome instead of creating one not yet determined

When I think artifact, it sounds like ancient technology, or (so-far) unexplained item of immense value. That makes it sound like there are some things you could dodge, but at the risk of damaging or fatiguing your whole body. The thought alone of wading through air itself makes me think of being trapped in molasses.. and it also sounds like it would be impossible to breathe at certain speeds! Or.. would you not need to breathe if your body slowed down?
Ah see now you're really getting it! in an untrained hand the artifact could very well destroy the user.
And I can't exactly explain the artifacts a whole lot right now other than they are the source of forbidden, evolutionary sciences that have been developed thanks to researching on them, though some would say the knowledge gleamed was still a fraction of the actual sheer power and knowledge behind them.
Ancient technology? well you're not too far off. you're not far off with any of your assumptions really.
But yes, someone with this one artifact's power can dodge things, or even change things at the risk of damage or fatigue. AND YES exactly like wading through a heavy current, because Air itself it not "empty", especially at high speeds. The breathing thing is probably easier to hold your breath while using it, but you wouldn't be using the ability for long, in fact, the current owner of the artifact has only ever used it at max 30 seconds of their own time, at extreme cost to themselves. It's best used in few second intervals to prevent any serious long lasting damage.
But, if someone were to tap you while using it, I'd imagine it'd be like a mach 3 punch.

I should mention also that most of the artifacts are destroyed now.
There's only maybe 2-3 left, one of them being the time warping one. Someoneeeeeeeeeee destroyed them all
However, the damage has been done to the world of learning knowledge it shouldn't have too soon, and now balances itself on a needle thin fulcrum.
New "replicas" and inventive artifacts have been created, and although they'll never match up to the originals they still pose an incredible threat to the world as there's now a struggle for power to acquire even these fake ones.

That's actually really neat-- Even though these artifacts are incredibly dangerous in the wrong hands (perhaps that is why they were destroyed in the first place, to prevent such?), people are still trying to use this forbidden knowledge to replicate them... It's an endless stream of jeopardizing everything!
