Here's my beloved, modeling the tail I made just for him.... *purrs and pets it* I really like how the plates came out...
This isn't a finalized version of KaniS' particular fursona (his tail normally doesn't have plating like this), just working on a generic pattern for dragon tails because I don't think I've seen very many out there. A little more tweaking needs to be done to the pattern, but this is pretty much how it should appear.
For anyone who wants one, just note me- I don't charge much, since I'm new to the fursuit thing. Been sewing and making costumes for years, though. :) I make all my patterns from scratch, too. no McCall's patterns for fursuit bodies for this old dragoness (though they're still pretty good, if you just want a comfy, baggy sort of body for your character- and it's an easy pattern to use for the novice-costumer)!

Thank you! I like this plate idea, too. Cool thing is, I can pretty much use any scale-patterned vinyl for them and paint them whichever colour is needed. The scaley hologram fabric is a bit harder to find, though, so if you're a very metallic or shiny dragon, I might have a few troubles finding an odd colour. But, LA is an awesome place to go fabric-shopping. Heh. The most astounding array of materials available that I've ever seen, and I used to work in a fabric warehouse.
Heh. It can be done, hon. Lemme know what kind of material you'd like and pass some cash my way (It takes about five hours to make each one)... I've suggested $50-$60 for these because of the work. Lemme fiddle with the pattern a bit first- it has a few glitches. You want the same style, or something a bit more individual? *has this cool pvc scaled material that sews nicely and can be painted a lovely silver with acrylics*
XD Oh hon, I was only kidding. I mean yeah, I'd love one, but I've got under $30 to my name and no safe shipping address. ^.=.^ For me this is one of those things that you just stare at through the shop window and think about how nice it would be to actually own one, with no real intention of ever getting one.
Ugh, I know how that feels... Too many times I've had to go through the embarrassment of putting a pair of jeans (for example) on layaway because I couldn't afford the cheap-ass 40$ they cost all at once... I get lots of stuff second-hand or from dumpsters, and wear 'em to rags because I can't afford to get new stuff. Furniture? Never mind- that's inherit it from friends or get it from the local kip, too...
Surprisingly, I've found some really cool furniture that way- it's amazing what some idiots will toss, just because they got something "better". One old chair I found is in slightly ratty shape (the upholstery is shit, but the frame is still firm), but the f**ker's a possible antique at least sixty years old- probably older, judging from the style, though it could be a replica (it would still be a more than half-century old replica). I mean, who uses horsehair and kapok (short-fibre wild cotton, uncleaned) for stuffing anymore?! Gonna re-upholster it in burgundy leather.
No safe shipping addy? Can you have stuff sent to an understanding buddy? Heh, when's yer birthday?

My hatch-day is a little odd- historically, only tragedies seem to occur on that date, or Presidential inaugeral events. *shrugs* Go figure... But, there is one cool thing that happened on my hatch-day- one of my all-time favourite scientists was born on that date about two and a half decades before me. :) *cheers for Jane Goodall* She's amazing, and brave, to do the kind of in the wilds research she does.
Woo! Which Con? Be a fun event to wear it at, too. *grins* I managed to finish mine and Kani's heads (they seriously need to be re-done, though- construction issues) and got to fursuit for the first time at Further Confusion. That was a blast... And very, very warm- cellu-clay does not breathe in the slightest... Back to the drawing board. I'm thinking of going with evac foam for the structural bits and the softer reticulated foam for the coolness it gives (it's a wide, open cell foam that breathes)...
Yeah, I hear ya- poverty sucks the big boner, and so many of us (me included) have barely enough to live on... Which is why I'm developing patterns for fursuit partials and later, full suits with heads- I need to make an income, darnit. I hates the kind of jobs I'm usually able to get: service work like bussing tables or washing dishes. I don't need another job where I'm on my feet for eight grueling hours. Doing that for the last couple of decades is what made the arthritis in my knees and lower back almost unbearable- I hate eating pain-killers like candy with a passion...
Huh, I know how that feels, believe me. I have the damndest time finding a job, most years. My marketable skill-set is pretty small. I dunno, maybe it's 'cuz I'm a bit goofy-lookin' or it's my fat- but folks just don't wanna hire me. No one believes me when I tell them that I have heard the same song-and-dance from employers for almost twenty-five years: "We can't hire you because you don't have the experience" I usually have to tell them "Look, how long do I have to hear that drivel? How the heck am I supposed to get the experience if someone doesn't at least hire me? I'm in my bloody twenties (then thirties, now forties) and that excuse is getting old. Hire me, train me, whatever. I'm not stupid, I can fuggin' learn, ya know. Somebody's gotta give me a break."
So, yeah, I've been there- it sux the big boner.

Thanks! I'd originally sized the pattern to my height- it would come to just past my upper calves. On KaniS, it's just past his knees. The material is pretty awesome stuff, even if it was a pain to sew. The vinyl painted up wonderfully, though. that hologram stuff was so fragile and thin... had to be extra careful while I worked with it.
Yup, yup! That was me and my Mate, KaniS. I was the shorter, fatter one in black with the choppy hair-style. He was the more slender, sweetly-nerdy fellow who clung to my paw a lot. We ended up playing Munchkin with a couple of folks, too. We were a clog in the living-room, though, and I laughed my tail off at the movie they played that night ("Black Sheep"). The best scene was the older brother getting it on with his sheep, and later, when it got zombified (and he'd lost his zombie sheepness) he'd asked her to have him again and she bit his dick off (owwwwww)... *cackles*
Did we get to talk at all?
Oh, and head's up, if you have a fursuit, a partial, or even just a tail, there's a furry parade on Nov 1st (a Saturday) at noon. They're meeting at Union Station, if you're interested. Me and KaniS can't go, though *wails*- we have a fundraising walk for the CNI we have to be at.

Hahaha, omg I didnt get to see the whole movie, I didnt even know what it's about but I think I'll have to rent it now lmao.
Sorry we didnt get to talk or introduce ourselves. I just remember looking at the neat tails as I was walking by. And no, I don't make it a habit of looking at people's 'tails'! O.o LOL. I was running around with my sketchbook and also being a guide for one of my fursuiter friends. I have a fullsuit as well but I didn't bring it because it's getting some touch-ups.
I never heard of any fursuit parade! I might do the Halloween thing with Exdra's gang in Hollywood. Where is this Union Station? I live 3 hours from the PS X.x

Erk, not sure how to tell you- I'm actually from Winnipeg (in Canada), so I'm not all that familiar with LA, yet (though I'm moving here to be with my fiancee, KaniS). Union Station is in Downtown La, I believe. The Exdra Hollywood thing might the same event. Go have a look at one of Exdra's journals from a couple of days ago- that's where I heard about the fursuit walk.
Three hours from the PS- argh- that's a drive. Kani and I are about an hour and a bit from the Skiltaire ourselves...
And the movie was called "Black Sheep", filmed in Britain, and it's pretty hilarious. Think "Saun Of The Dead" but with genetically-altered sheep with gruesome appetites. *grins evilly* They went for gory, but humourous at the same time- a hard trick to pull off, I admit. I found it enjoyable in a pop-corn movie kind of way. I like some pretty stupid movies, though, so don't take my word on it.

Well, it's not too expensive, but it is a bit fragile. I'm considering putting a fusible interfacing on it the next time I work with it to give it a bit more body. It's a bit stretchy and can ladder like nylons if treated too harshly. The wonderful hologram stuff will rub off a little while you work with it, but it doesn't seem to lose it's lustre right away, so you can likely wear it for quite a long time before all the scales rub off. I wouldn't reccommend washing it in a washing-machine- hand wash for this and gently. If you want to make something more substantial than a tail, see about making sure any panels of this stuff are placed where there won't be any rubbing-wear (like on the sides of a shirt, for example).
Yeah, finding good woolen felt is almost impossible and it's bloody expensive. one thing you could try is felting some wool yourself: look for a sale on light-weight, worsted woolens (ones with some rayon content work for this, too), so you can buy it for cheap, then hand-wash it in the hottest water your paws can stand (if you wear those big rubber gloves, you take a higher temp) and gently swish it in the hot water. Leave it in there for a while. Or you could gently heat it in a large pot on the stove for a half-hour: use the lowest settings. After, lay it flat (don't wring!) and press a dry towel on it with a weight. Or you could roll it in a couple of towels into a tube, lay it on the floor and press the water out by standing on it. Very gently iron. The material will have shrunk by about twenty percent, so be sure you have enough for your project, taking the shrinkage into account. You will now have a high-quality woolen felt that didn't cost you a ton of cheddar, and you won't have to back it with anything, unless you find wool itchy. Craft away and enjoy!
