buckhopper's character Lance Cheval had a promising basketball career ahead of him when he jumped ship to try to fulfill his childhood dream of movie stardom. After his first film was misdirected (and, some said, miscast), he found himself struggling for any income at all, eventually having to settle for work that he found humiliating and unsavory to make ends meet.
Somewhat in desperation, he turned back to basketball, showing up for open tryouts with the Santa Ana Spectrums. Here, he awaits his turn.

I'm so glad you liked this, and I'm happy to contribute! I found myself rereading the stories and figured that this moment cried out for illustration. :)
Humorously, at least one thing you noted wasn't intended; my original sketch called for others seated on the bench behind him, actually watching the proceedings while Lance brooded with his attention elsewhere. I suspect, however, that by the time he reaches the end of the line with fewer people around to recognize and judge him, he'd probably peek up to examine--and mentally critique--the competition.
