Dr. Bergmann hung his raincoat beside the door, dripping wet after coming from outside a moment ago.
- Hello, Desmond. Did something interesting happen since I installed the camera?
- Not really. Nothing. Besides that it started to rain - professor Bonsai replied, looking away from the computer screen.
- I hope nothing will happen to the camera? It's covered with leaves and all, but... - Bergmann pondered worriedly.
- Don't worry, John, these cameras are designed to be left out in the open. A little rain will do it no harm - Desmond replied reassuredly and reverted his gaze towards the screen.
On the camera feed, a small forest was visible, along with a single Victreebell within a short distance. A victreebell which, of course, just sat there.
All wild pokemons were promptly domesticated upon being caught. Eating artificial candy and berries, fighting whenever and only when their trainers decided to do so, they barely exhibited any behavior they would in the wild, besides a bunch of trademark abilities the humans found worth encouraging.
Professor Bonzai and doctor Bergmann set out to explore the behaviors of pokemon in the wild, believing it to be the best way to gain proper understanding of them. Now they found the opportunity to examine the original diet of the Victreebell. Photosynthesis is not enough to live, for plants and animals alike, and the Victreebell family seemed to be just like carnivorous pitcher plants. But still no one established for sure, just what do Victreebell actually eat, besides candy?
So far, the plant pokemon just sat there.
Two people stared at the scene for a few more seconds.
- You know, the camera is going to capture everything anyway - remarked the professor - we've got a lot of free disk space, so we might as well just check on the camera tomorrow...
A moment after after he finished speaking, something else appeared in the camera's field of vision.
- A Victreebell could eat a Raticate, right? - doctor Bergmann asked, the new pokemon on the screen sparking his curiosity.
- Maybe it could... - prof. Bonsai answered reluctantly - but would it bother? The raticate would put quite a fight in any case, and Victreebell in the wild make a big deal out of conserving energy, as far as I'm concerned...
The raticate had a pretty good day so far. He had a good meal today and was heading off to someplace that would be good for the rest. But then it started to rain. He tried to just wait under a tree, hoping for the weather to change, yet the rain was not ceasing and the sun was about to set. This was not a very good place to spend the night, so he got up and started to look for a good hiding spot.
And when he spotted the plant pokemon, he was glad to see it - because he knew something the two scientists did not.
When the rodent started clambering on top of the plant, it did not react besides giving him a bored look. The Victreebell clearly did not find it bothersome or unusual when the Raticate climbed on it and then carefully proceeded to climb inside its mouth, hind paws first. The rat slowly descended a bit, holding onto the plant's bell's inner edges until he was about halfway down, and fully inside. Wary of the digestive fluid at the bottom, he outstretched his limbs until he found himself comfortably stuck. In this position, the Raticate started dozing off, comfortable with the situation. The place felt very warm, the Victreebell had placed its leaf above the mouth to avoid being filled with rainwater overnight, there was no worry about any predators bothering the rat pokemon. And he knew he was going to pay his rent easily.
The two scientists watched the screen in bewildered silence. They exchanged brief glances, but did not speak.
- I think it's actually stuck somewhere in the middle - Desmond finally stated.
- what does it mean? - asked John.
The professor thought for a while, and then just shrugged. They watched some more, but after several unproductive minutes they eventually gave up and decided to get some rest.
The morning came, and the rat woke up, well rested. Ready to go on his way, he started to climb out of the plant pokemon's belly. Raticate was halfway out when he felt the need to relieve himself... and did so without giving it a second thought. Once the Raticate was done, he promptly got out all the way, hopped down and began to walk away. Victreebell once again merely observed him lazily, most definitely not upset by any of the events.
Some time later, the researcher duo arrived at the scene. Doctor Bergmann started to retrieve the camera while the professor began approaching the plant pokemon.
- be careful with that - John called out to his friend, seeing him getting close.
- relax, John, trained Victreebell might learn to swallow stuff on every occasion, but this wild guy won't hurt me as long as it doesn't feel threatened...
He peeked inside the plant's mouth for a moment, until he got slapped over the head with a vine.
- ow, alright, sorry! - he shouted, backing off quickly. - I got it, John, it makes sense!
- it sure does make sense to be careful around wild pokemon... - dr. Bergmann remarked. - or did you conclude something about what we have seen here so far?
- I definitely did... - prof. Bonsai replied. - and this explains my previous observations too! So: there are pokemon like Bulbasaur, with plant aspects but still definitely animals, needing animal diets and all. The Victreebell though, it's pretty much just an exceptionally active plant. So it can mostly rely on photosynthesis, and also nutrients from the soil. But since they're hardly rooted, they don't get much of it, so they use insect traps for that, but they don't really need meat, only a few substances, and the feces are really rich in nitrogen...
At this point, Desmond paused to take a deep breath.
- So, we might need some more research, but this is a pretty impressive discovery... Eventually, we may improve the pokemon-keeping... unless the candy lobbyists will complain...
Going back home, John Bergmann was really satisfied with their first days of research. The discovery they just made was pretty incredible. Also, he thought, maybe he should get himself a Victreebell?
And here's something special at the end...
