Stumbled across this strip I whipped up for inclusion in an APA I belong to. One of the members had turned christian, and announced in the APA he had burned all his adult artwork. Granted, it wasn't very good artwork, but all species of book-burning give me the willies. Seems to me that if your god is so scared of opposing viewpoints that he demands all "competing" books be burned...then he must be a really crap god. Why should anyone worship a paranoid weakling?

Mostly it comes from Calvinist and Puritan strains of Protestantism, which took cues from a Catholic scholar whose name escapes me who supposed that if extra-marital and non-procreative sex were bad in God's view (keep in mind this was God's view as related to a small collection of herdsman tribes who were trying to build themselves up into an actual Nation, which takes Manpower, which takes Breeding.) then Sex in general was bad and sexual pleasure (even for procreation with your wife) was a satanic perversion of God's original intentions. Which combined with Puritan ethics revolving around the idea that God's rules against certain pleasurable but self-destructive activities not being about helping people lead overall happier and healthier lives on Earth but about some metaphysical inverse correlation between pleasure felt in this life and pleasure felt in the next and you get why there's such a big mad-on with the Religioous Right about ANYTHING that feels good.. Especially if it is relatively consequence-free or can be made consequence-free.
This is the fundamental flaw which makes taking Religion as 'Serious Buisness' so dangerous. Even assuming there is a God, assuming he is as all-powerful and perfect as many theists believe Him/Her/Hir/It to be, everything we Think we know about Deity is pure supposition penned onto paper by mortal hands which have been copied and translated and transliterated for generations by more mortal hands... and once Human Logic starts gnawing on an idea All Bets are Off.

Seriously? That's rather sad, as his was among the first materials I came across when I initially came across furry artwork.
I wrote poetry some years back and while I'm not always thrilled upon rereading it, I have a hard time imagining being in denial of what I produced during that period.
As they say, the past is prologue. To deny what I was is to deny what I am now.

Oh sure Porn is not ok, But killing others is ok for not believing into your imagination friend

Well, it does say to love your neighbor, disown your family, sell everything you own, drinking deadly poison is safe, and that looking at someone lustfully means you should tear your eyes out.
So, if he was a good, upstanding catholic, he should have used that blow torch on his face.

when i first moved into my new apartment here in texas a pair of old guys came to my door and gave me a pamphlet inviting me to a book burning. i personaly thing the concept is crazy but they were so freaking caual about it it caught me totaly off gurd like they just invited me over for tea or something. they even rambled off a few things that they were gona burn and i found it pericularly ironic that just to my right not 2 feet from these guys is a bookshelf 90% filled with everything they just listed. i ended up not going
Rule #1
The Bible is NOT God's word, it is what some MAN SAYS is God's word.
And each man that makes a new version of the Bible rewords to suit his own agenda.
God said 'avoid' sin not destroy it. You prove yourself by avoiding sin. If all sin is removed then what is left to avoid to prove your worthyness?
Like the guy in the comic, most new Christians have not actually read the Bible, cover to cover.

Dude, that's pretty damn close to what I've been saying for YEARS. You can't trust a book written by man because man is flawed, and is going to insinuate and corrupt anything with his own ideas and opinions and beliefs. He's gonna put things it dealing with the situation of the time period or how he feels things should be so everyone can be like him.
And then there are those who insist that because the Bible contains 'The Living Word' of God it is thus immune to corruption and thus despite thousands of years of re-prints and re-translations the end-product contains 100% literal relevant Truth and you shouldn't be all namby-pamby trying to 'interpret' it through 'context'.
There's a word for believing that your God, in whole or in part, dwells within an inanimate object.. it's called Idolatry.

Then there's the ones who think that unproven theories and idealogy should be taught as fact. Ben Stein's lost some of my respect for that Expelled propaganda film he did. Not for the fact he did it, but for the fact that they twisted and maniuplated so much of the information to make it seem like all of Science is against anyone with religious beliefs, not even speaking to the ton of scientists who are religious.
Then there's things like the Creationist museum that makes me sigh and shake my head. I've got respect for people wit religious views, just that line of thought comes off as boarderline insanity to me. Dinosaurs on Noah's Ark! I swear I'm not making that up! It's in the museum!

I believe you, not to mention all the broken fallacies the creationists continue to latch onto, they're actually arguing against a sort of strawman darwinism rather than the actual contemporary theory of Evolution.. and even that dosn't contradict anything but the literalist interpretation of Genisis (the theory that life sprang from lifelessness and was not 'created' by some higher order is Abiogenisis, not Evolution.)
Yeah, and even if you take some of the things they feeblely cling to as truth with a donkey like stubbornness, they still ignore the facts. For example, the light from the stars are billions of years old and it's taken all the time for the light to reach earth. But their stubbornness makes them believe that God put them that far away already and that he makes the light already be reaching the 6000 year old Earth for people to have something to look at. I mean, after so much evidence the universe is VASTLY older than what they believe, they completely ignore it all.
Another religion thing that ticks me off is how some believe that simply because someone else is a different religion or has a different view on things, they are wrong or evil. Take Muslims for example, of which there are different denominations, just like Christianity, yet some of these people believe ALL muslims are terrorists, even if they are african american and muslim, even if they are completely different denominations from the extremist groups. And it pisses me off how many people hate Obama because they say he's muslim since his father was born into a muslim family, yet he IS Christian. Like it would really be that horrible if someone of a non-christian faith got into political power.
Things gotta be bad if someone like Elton John feels that religion breeds hate. I think that a number of religious institutions should take a look inward and try to reform themselves and their actions towards the betterment of mankind instead of bringing back religious persecution and spoutings filled with hate.

I feel that religions are legalized Cults. People willing to do or say anything for a belief with no real physical evidence to back it up (artifacts don't count as they were created by humans) is utter nonsense. Especially when Science contradicts nearly everything all mainstream religions believe in.
Heh heh. Awesome! I'm agnostic (cause I know everyone cares), and I think this same concept could apply if you replaced "sex" with "evolution". Even if the Bible is gospel truth (I know, redundant), who's to say God didn't create an amoeba that evolved into man? The book itself doesn't specify that it was a one-step process, or how long a "day" was.
Looking at the time descriptiond before and after that lines inthe bible and tora they said god has a completely different movement in time, not comparable with days, except that it had a resting period afterwards. Mealing the literalists not even follow the bible. And when you hit their faces at the tora that was before the start rather talking about "Jewish corruption" than thinking that they ripped things out of context.
They, at different points, tell different times for how long a day for god is, meaning that they use "day" in this context rather to describe "step of progress" as an easier image, and do not mean 24 hours. And 24 hours is exactly what most of who take the bible completely literal say, so they contradict their own sources.
What I find funny about book burning and such is on where they get it in the first place because even if it is donated by factions of the church they are still buying it from somewhere which in fact building revenue to those that they are protesting in the first place so the writer, artist or whoever can make something that doesn't have to be good as long as these groups don't like them for some reason to burn it it just makes them more money...
Like nonbelievers need more ammunition against people whose most vocal have proved to be idiots.
ITT MY BELIEFS (OR LACK OF BELIEFS) IS/ARE BETTER THAN YOUR BELIEFS
Honestly, religion is a really personal thing and and arguing on the internet about it doesn't help you convert people to your views, it just makes you retarded.
You will never catch me talking about "my beliefs" and shit, anything that's truly personal will not be broadcast for the internet to see, or try to argue about.
Although keep in mind some folks who do believe in something/anything would much rather be left alone. ;)

Well in this case there is no real person anyway so that calls into question the whole entire argument. How can you commit adultery with a nonexistent person? But I think only the married person is committing adultery if he or she has an affair with somebody who's unmarried. Though I might be wrong.
Well, I think the context is that you "Desiring" someone, fictional or nonfictional, is committing adultery, because you're desiring someone other than your spouse.
However, this is somewhat vague in the context of, a) What if you and your spouse watch pornography together as a marital aide? is this adultery? B) what if you're not married? Pornography seems 100% okay in that case.

Ah, but see that is an extrapolation. Mr Theo up there is a biblical literalist, so according to him the bible is not open to interpretation therefore unless it actually says that its about desiring someone other than your spouse, it isn't. The problem with such people is that often they will be very literal when it comes to parts of the bible that explicitly support their position and more intepretational with parts that don't. I personally don't believe in any of it but thats beside the point.
Well one school of thought is to extrapolate, such people talk of impure thoughts and the like. The problem this presents them is that if you are willing to extrapolate even a little bit, the bible can be used to support just about any position on any topic. The other school of thought is that if the bible doesn't say it specifically it cant be inferred. However this second group will often break their own rule when it suits them, and of course they are faced with troubles when the bible says something that is irrelevant to them now (such as eating shellfish or wearing cloth made of more than one tread, being abominations).
So the long and short of it is its essentially a useless argument- Either you have to live up to several bizarre and often meaningless requirements and ignore certain things not specifically mentioned, or otherwise admit the bible may be failable/open to interpretation meaning the possibility that you might be wrong about any or all of the bible (or that it may be wrong entirely), clearly an unacceptable position for many true believers.
That's how it seems to me. They often go for some sort of mixture of the two. Try asking a fundamentalist christian who is opposed to homosexuals why Leviticus 18 which says "Thou shalt not lie with mankind, as with womankind: it is abomination" is important, and why Leviticus 11 which says "And all that have not fins and scales in the seas,... they shall be an abomination unto you" is not. You are unlikely to get a friendly response.
What the Bible teaches, and what is so often misconstrued by voracious Christians is that one is supposed to turn away from sin. Many things can be the conduit of sin (Pornography, alcohol, violence) etc... I am a rotten example of a Christian, but I still believe, which is the key so often lost.
As Christians, we are not supposed to get all judgemental on everyone, but to try to lead by example, and to lead others, if possible, to Christianity.
Too often people used religeon to segregate, and then all manner of shite gets stirred up. God hates sin, NOT the sinner.
If he decides that he needs to burn his stuff, he has made a decision based on his faith, and it's really not cool to mock him for it. After all, it's his life, his faith, and his art.
Let's not fall into the same trap and fling judgement back and make even more bad blood where there really shouldn't be any... If that's what he wansta do, there ya go.

And you call yourself a rotten example? Sure, people would think that if they see you (not "being" a christian), but if you really believe in what you say you're far from being a rotten example of a christian.
When I see a christian I see a good car, a nice house, good looking wife, obedient kids, no problems at all, everything's fine. Funnily enough the Bible says otherwise, that those who believe will be mocked, insulted and have the worse mishaps they could imagine. Yet God says he never tries us above our pain threshold, so I wonder if with those shiny and polished looking christians will be their pain threshold or their faith to crumble first.

It's a life of simultanious reward and ridicule, IF you are doing it right.
We are already seeing a massive cultural backlash against Christian ideals, hell, you cant even have the Ten Commandments on display in public or in a State facility. Some see this as positive, but if you tried to ban a public display of Jewish or Buddhist or Muslim tenets protested the way they protest Christian displays, the ACLU and every bleeding heart nearby would be wailing for blood. We are seeing the change that is leading to something far darker. I personally blame organised religeon, they have painted us as nutcase Bible-thumping wet blankets who live to be miserable and make others feel guilty.
I don't wanna suffer and die for my faith, but I also won't renounce it. I am not a good example, but my faith is MY faith. I won't stop it because someone finds it offensive.

Of course it's the organised religion's fault, they gather the wealth en masse, they make up the rules as they see fit and they use and abuse quotings from the Bible to make them look as they want to, while the whole message is being obscured. Because of them people get a false and far from the truth idea of what Christianity really is.
And amen to that, nobody can decide who or what you have to worship, you found the Lord (or vice versa) and you accepted him as your personal saviour, you believe in Him, you have faith in him and no one can make you change your mind, it's a personal relationship between Him and you.

I remember discussing this with him. He honestly had, at the very least, an interesting position on it: he'd been in hard times before and his faith had pulled him through. He felt that by being a smut peddler, he was working counterpoint to those who had helped him and wanted to get things back in what he felt was the proper order. Hadn't a clue he'd gone quite -that- far, but then again I've not exchanged word one in a number of years.
I disagreed, but such is life. I won't mention the artist's name outright out of respect for him, much of which I still have.

Sad thing is most people don't understand or follow or just plain ignore some of the main teachings of their religion. Whatever happened to turning the other cheek and the teachings of love and kindness? Religion in general is an alright idea until put to practice.
A few things always get me about religion. The primary thing is I'd like to see more people take a bit of an analytical view of their religion. And I mean actually look into it and some of it's history. It rather amazes me how many christians I've met don't know of all the pagan symbolism absorbed into the religion, and simply to get more follows when the religion was starting out. The Christmas Tree, the Yule Log, the eggs and bunnies from easter? All pagan symbolism.
The second thing is the forgiveness. I've seen a number of times on tv where this person commited an atrocity, like butchered a family with an axe, then finds God in prison, and all the christians want that person to not be given the death penalty for the sole reason that person found God. Where were these people BEFORE this killer found God? A good quote from Isaac Asimove when discussing religion is (I might butcher this a little, but the general idea is the same, and he was an athiest) "You have your god that you can go to to forgive you. But me, I have nobody to forgive me for my actions." In other words, if you do something bad, you can repent and then forget about it and go on like nothing ever happened. An athiest doesn't have that luxery, he has to live with his actions his whole life, and has to pretty much live with the consiquence. Whole thing reminds me of the Halloween episode of Moral Oral where Oral's gonna break the ten commandments so he'll be afraid of God on Halloween then repent the next day so everything will be back to normal to which his best friend says "Boy, Christianity sure is convenient".
As for Timba, I miss his stuff, and I'd LOVE to find some of his amazing non-porn stuf like his Four Horsemen pictures. he did GREAT mecha artwork!

Yes, that is one of the problems with religion. People let others interpret their scripture instead of reading it themselves and think about it for themselves.
The Islam was a very open religion in the beginning. The Jihad was not a purely military thing. Unless I am completely wrong it was supposed to be more like preach it untill everyone follows it. The Jihad as a military exercise started mostly after some jerks came up with the crusades.

Actually, if you read the Bible ABSOLUTELY LITERALLY, all art forbidden, porn or not. That's what the whole Iconoclasm was about, when the faithful were destroying all the art in the world. Exodus 20:4 "Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth."
Sound to me like ALL art is absolutely and expressly forbidden, no exceptions, Amen --Except abstract (fantasy art might slide by, as long as you don't use any references).
Dumb book.

...English Revised Version; Webster's Bible Translation; World English Bible; Young's Literal Translation. With what little Latin I know, the Biblia Sacra Vulgata appears to use the same wording. I can't tell you about the Hebrew and Chinese Bibles because I can't read them, but basically, any Bible you pick up in any church in the world or any hotel room.
The only one that waters it down and tries to make it sound like something that isn't just plain mean and psychotic is the New American Standard, which tries to make it sound as though it's the idol that should not resemble anything in heaven or earth. The original phrase is "twumnah 'aher shamayim ma'al 'erets mayim" which being in a language that lacks conjuctions creates the possibility for confusion.
But the consensus is pretty clear: Art is FORBIDDEN. And people want to post this in school rooms? No, they want to post an expurgated, prettied-up version, with the embarrassing parts chopped off. Fucking pseudo-pious, hypocritical apostates.

Point well taken. The world is full of people go to church every sunday, but come home and beat their wives\children, cheat on their income tax, and whatever else. They do it because its what their parents did, not because it means anything to them. Then there's the man who hasn't seen the insides of a church for ages and yet lives in fellowship with God. A church is a device for dealing with people en-masse, and therefore a bad place to grow on a personal level, where all things spiritual rest. Some do grow honest faith in the "church" environment, but more often than not there's no one to show them the kind, tolerant, and NOT OBNOXIOUS way to practice that faith. The failures, though, think they have license to condemn anyone who doesn't share their exact views, and the books burn. This is not what God wants. We are ordered to be "wide in what we tolerate in others but narrow in what we tolerate in ourselves" Further; "Who are you to judge the servant of somebody else?" That last quote was from a chapter that talked all about tolerance. It said, among other things, that if someone does something that their conscience does not condem, they may do it. They must respect also that each person's way is unique. For some the spirit forbids, for others it condemns. Make up your mind what you believe, then shut up about it!
The bible is NOT about "Don't do this or that" as so many think it is. It is about freedom. Oh, there are a few posted rules: 1. love God, 2. Love your neighbor as you love yourself. (all commands from the OT are summed up by these.) No sexual imorality, dont eat blood or meat with blood still in it, or anything that has been strangled or offered to idols. There are a few more rules here and there, most are common sense, but others are debatable so I won't mention them here. The rest is between you and God. Follow your conscience, that is his way of guiding you. "you will not need any one to teach you. God himself will be your teacher." and "I will write my laws upon their hearts." No, the Bible has greater import than being a measley rule book. it is truths and secrets of the universe and knowing God as he truly is, distilled down for little entities like us. You can read as deep or shallow as you care to. In the end, it all boils down to Love. However, unless you have faith, you'll never be able to see between the lines!
So, the young man who has turned his back on the erotic has merely done what he feels is right. Leave him in peace. When people are new to the faith, sometimes they try extra hard. I was in a similar situation a decade ago. It may be that his conscience may yet allow him back. I offer that God created all things including; sex, passion, beauty and joy. We are free to think about them, provided it is in a moral way. Ever read the biblical book "song of songs?" its all erotic poetry. Please don't associate my God with the foolish notions of ignorant, meddlesome and judgemental people who wrongfully go about accusing my brothers day and night, just like the evil one is fond of doing. Karno, I'm real sorry if someone along the line did something to make you feel the way you do. But please don't return their example of ridiculing and denouncing the things people love.

A very stirring post. If you'd been born in a different time zone, you'd be writing the same about Allah, or Vishnu, or M'*gkuru the Loud, telling us all to read between the lines of the Koran, or the Bagivad Gida or the Prose Edda. When what you believe is an accident of birth, it's hard to accept it as a universal, undeniable and unvarying "Truth." It's seems like nothing more than one story among many thousands of similar stories.
Karno loves ridiculing things that he finds foolish, poking fun at the absurdities of human existence (even his own, and it takes some talent to make open heart surgery hilarious). Isn't it a little narrow of you to tell him to stop doing the thing he loves? Is it only because he is poking fun at the foolishness of someone who claims to believe the "One True Undying Word" that you tell him to stop? Would you be doing the same if he had made fun of a follower of Ásatrú? It's hard to do, because Odin didn't hand down any commandments like that, but I'm sure there's some meat, there.
Karno loves ridiculing things that he finds foolish, poking fun at the absurdities of human existence (even his own, and it takes some talent to make open heart surgery hilarious). I'll concede on allowing karno to express his humor, but just the same, when someone calls my best friend crap, don't I have the right to say "yeah I get the joke, but he's NOT like that" As to your assertion that I would be writing form another religious background simply because of where I might live, this is not so. I Looked into other ones. There I would have looked also. My faith is the only one that speaks to me. There's no sign of what people consider so important and religious. Holy sites, rivers. God is the creator of the universe, what makes one little landmark on one little planet so special? And then there's ritual. With my way ritual, as most things are, are informal and between God and the person. My faith describes genuine religion as LOVE: "taking care of widows and orphans and not allowing oneself to become corrupted by the world" There are no alterior motives or persecution (though people have wrongly created it.) No one has ever had a bad thing to say about love. But anyhow, if you're looking for an argument I'm not going to participate. You have had your say, as have I, and I think neither will move the others' hearts any further.
I know David Buttenshaw real well. I never forget that canine in his trench-coat, shades and his hat. His artworks is actually really and has really influenced me to draw something. It's a real shame he destroyed his nifty works. I will never forget that Wolfy who seems to get himself in pervy situation with other ladies.
I knew an artist named John Cargouet. Extremely talented, natural artist. He could make centaur sex look fluid and sensual, which takes some ability. You could call it porn, but not in the sense of modern furry porn, because this was some lovely, classical erotic work, in the best traditions of the old masters. He was prolific, too, trading art with dozens of people. From all I heard about him, he was a really cool, nice, talented young artist. Given a little time and study, he could easily have made a living at art.
About twenty years ago, he stopped making art. He contacted everybody he had sent art to, telling them he had undergone a religious awakening and requested, begged them to destroy all the art that he had sent. (most did not). His highly religious family had discovered his secret love of erotic art, and in intense sessions of prayer and moral intervention, had convinced him of the error of his ways. He stopped making erotic art. He stopped making any art, in fact. A few years later, he committed suicide.
If anybody wonders why I view religion with nothing less than utter contempt and revulsion , in particular religions that claim to have an absolute lock on morality, his story is one reason among many (even paganism has something to answer for). I'm proud of you, Karno, that you can make this amusing, when it's really a sad, horrible perversion of humanity.

Karno, you are the kind of person I'd like to meet in person and have a nice chat over a hot cup of coffee.
And well, anything i can say it has already been said above by the others.
What i don't like is how people use religion, God, His son and the bible to go on trying to spread their bigotry, intolerance and hate just because some some self appointed apostle tells them to. People nowadays have lost the real view of what God and Christ are about, and that's NOT hate and intolerance or trying to change people's point of view to yours about how God, His son and religion should be worshiped or viewed, or, that if you don't believe in the whole thing the way they do, you wont be happy and are going to Hell where your soul will be for all Eternity.
I like when they go all about how God is love and Jesus Christ saves and you'll be forgiven, but the minute they find out you are different in some way as to what their beliefs say people should be like they go all Hell and Brimstone on you. All thoughts of love and "respect thy neighbor" go, so to speak, to Hell.
But i guess it is easier to many to do something or think in certain ways because someone else tells them to, instead of thinking and taking decisions by themselves. Oh, well, such is life and human idiosyncrasy.
Oh, and i am not religious. Or Christian.. and i believe in Randomius Factoria and that it was not "God's will" things happen or do not happen, but the result my own actions or inactions.

I remember an old high-school friend of mine. He was a bit of a huckster, a swindler, a confidence-man and all around nere-do-well yet still somehow a loveable rogue.
When he was 'Born Again' he burned all his hard rock and heavy metal albums... other than that, morally, he was the same scoundraly scallywag he always was.

Maybe they see it as giving into lust. I dunno. Personally, I think adult art helps to alleviate certain...urges, so that they don't express themselves in other ways, among other things. It also helps us by allowing scenarios that can't happen in real life (such as sexing up a hyper-endowed mink girl, among other things...)
It's a lot less God calling for that kind of censorship and more humans who're weak in their faith and feel they must destroy all temptation because they know they can't resist falling for it. Being weak they have to destroy or otherwise hide away from all temptation because they can't face it and if they hurt others in the process oh well at least they got what they wanted.
