I should draw from reference more often - the head started as a doodle of http://abcnews.go.com/International.....ry?id=19961178 but the expression kinda changed while I was drawing, so I had to add something he was distracted from. :)

Yup, reference pictures are definitely helpful, especially if you like drawing a particular animal. Draw them some twenty times from reference and then you've basically got down the structure of their face. ;> No need for reference after that.
Still, I love to see people do what they like to do and get better at it. Such good work!
