in an auction. They are based on a blue monarch butterfly, which made me come up with the name.
Danai (also known as Danae), the name, is based off part of a genus of butterfly, called Danaus, which is actually the genus the monarchs belong to. I wanted to make the name a bit more feminine, so I changed the ending from -us to -ai/ae, thinking back to my Latin classes. Danai[-ae] does not have a gender, as is generally referred to as "they/them", but will also accept "she/her" pronouns, as well, as they act more feminine.
Like most butterflies, Danai is small, barely reaching 7 inches in height in feral-form, and weighs approximately 2.5 grams. The butterfly-inspired wings' feathers are actually translucent: you can slightly see through them. In darkness, the feathers are luminescent, giving off a light blue light. The light is used for a couple things.
The main one is to attract souls. Danai uses the brilliance of their wings to get the attentions of the newly deceased's souls, and lead them the way to Paradise. Sometimes, though, those who have not died yet see the lights, and follow anyways; leading them onward until the light seemingly disappears [Danai going to the next plane of existence]. Many creatures, particularly the young, have gotten hopelessly lost due to this; Some have even perished, not paying mind to dangerous obstacles in the way such as cliffs and quick sand.
The second use is more of a symbolism than anything: to remind those who see the wings, that there is still hope.
Danai does chirp, rarely so, but they also love to hum songs it hears. When they feel threatened or frightened, the make a cracking sound from the back of their throat.
Otherwise, Danai doesn't talk much, and isn't very sociable. They prefer to keep their company to a minimum, usually keeping it to only to 1 or 2 others. Despite this, they enjoy watching others from a distance, and are caring and protective, almost like a maternal instinct.
