I keep writing dragons into TFC, and I keep not being able to draw them at all... and indeed I still can't. But I did want to kick my brain into thinking about how the different dragon elements might look different from each other.

you are aware that humans can't decide on one design for dragons ? ;)
There are so many different styles to them that you can actually go around and say any bigger lizard with wings of some sort is a dragon.
I think it is more about what you want to achieve with them rather then coming up with a design.
Then again I have a similar issue with designing a spaceship ^^'
