I do not normally do sprite work, edits or otherwise, but I felt inspired, by Ryusuta's Bunny Link to the Past mod, to create this. More specifically, I was wondering if there was any way, if she does decide to create a sequel mod in the form of Bunny Link's Awakening, to potentially help lighten some of the workload. I decided the most likely way I could help would be to volunteer to assist with sprite art and, despite no such mod being announced or even stated to be considered by Ryusuta, well... I became so curious about whether or not I actually could produce such sprite art that I decided to do a bit of a test run.
At first, I considered frankenspriting, using the existing rabbit NPC sprites. However, I quickly figured out that the bunny head graphics really do not fit well with Link's body. So, I needed to do things more the old-fashioned way, though the rabbit sprite was a useful reference for how to make the ears, at least, even if I did need to make the ears smaller so they would fit.
These sprites are obeying what, to my knowledge, are the limitations that such a mod would have to work under. Including transparent, Gameboy Color sprites are limited to four colors, from what I can tell. I considered changing the fur color to pink, to better match Bunny Link to the Past, but I realized that, depending on how the game is programmed, other things may share Link's palette entry, so I decided to go ahead and leave it unchanged, to be safe. Additionally, from what I can tell by looking at the existing sprites, Link is limited to 16x16 size, so I had to work hard to make sure I fit within those bounds. Though I only thought of that, of course, AFTER I had a finished sample of 19-pixel-tall sprites (gotta have room for those adorable ears!). The size limitation turned out to be the most painful one, really.
I'm not sure how well I would do with the rest of the sprites, though I could at least give a good try, if Ryusuta does like these sprites and desires my assistance on sprite work. That said, I shan't get my hopes up too far for such a mod coming up, since I know that it would be a fair bit of work and that the Bunny Link to the Past mod was likely a fair bit of work, and I can understand if that has left her a bit burned out on hacking.
Also, if she does eventually do the hack, adorable though the pictures would be, I will completely understand if Ryusuta edits out the photographer (or just goes with the non-DX version which did not have the photographer to begin with). I imagine that those pictures would be a pretty hefty amount of extra work.
Anyway, as for the credits, the base sprites were, of course, designed by Nintendo, and the sprite sheet itself that I used as a base was provided by "Bruce Juice."
