*disclaimer* The thoughts expressed in this comment are purely out of a personal OCD and are not meant to be in any way offensive. As a secondary point, I actually really like Arska's work, I wouldn't be watching him if I didn't XD Thirdly, the whole 'inconsistency' thing only bugs me when I'm looking at the same character repeatedly in several pics at once, not all the time XD
Commission for
tamurross
As a surprise to me, someone actually commissioned me, not just for a 2D piece, but a character thing, of all things haha.
Anyway, I was commissioned to work with Shiro Kamaitachi again, I'm hoping this'll sorta be used as a general reference. I mean that'[s what character sheets are for right? XD I mean, call me... whatever the fitting word is for this, but I'm not on the band wagon with the whole "my style" crap that every other artist clings on to like it's their life force.
I'm not saying you can't have a preferred way of doing stuff (ie. a style) but when your artistic spectrum is limited to just that, there's something wrong. An artist should be versed enough in his or her skills to be able to switch styles in the blink of an eye. Disney artists for example, had to do that a lot during the 80s and 90s
That said,
I tried to get as close as I possibly could to Arska's style of work, but while I feel I got in that general area, his line work is the big thing, so I'm pretty sure I'm in a safe zone.
I think he also exaggerates a few features more than I did, which for me was kind of a conscious choice, mainly because part of the point of a ref sheet is that proportions and details are consistent, and it's kind of hard to mimic what someone else is doing when the very artist that came up with the character has yet to draw two pictures where he doesn't look like he had a full facial reconstruction.
Not that this is a bad thing, mind you. I'm not trying to jab at Arska, his work is awesome. It's just that I've been working with the Disney guys here for a while and it's rubbed off on me that when a character's muzzle seems to have gained another two inches from one picture to the next, it's bothersome. It's an OCD, nothing more.
Mostly an animation principle, characters have to be consistent in animation, this doesn't necessarily apply to illustration/graphic design. But my eyes have been trained that way and I'm kind of over critical of things.
Anyway, regardless of whatever tangets I might go on, when the next Shiro pic pops up somewhere, I'm sure it's gonna look total different 'cuz of someone else's style anyway XD so I'm just gonna shut up and take it like a man lol.
I understand the whole "interpretation of a character" deal, even though usually I'm not entirely convinced by it and it comes off as "I'm just more comfortable working with what I already know how to do"
This of course comes out of seeing mainstream characters (Sonic, Mickey, the Beast, you name it) and people trying to mimick them, but the minute some random person on the internet comes at them with money to draw their character, they think "well, they're not a Disney character, so it's ok for me to completely change them to fit my needs"^^;
damn I went on another tangent rant O_o...... I'll stop now lol
