I took my first ever snowboarding lesson today! Had a fantastic time and loved it to bits, despite falling on my butt thirteen times, by my count. By the end of it I was really having fun and feeling like I could at least get to the bottom of the hill safe and more or less sound. It was pretty basic stuff of course, starting us off with toe and then heel side slips, and it took some practise to find the right balance point. When we got into diagonal side slips that's when I really started having a blast; more speed and a real sense of flow to it. That's the point I think I became hooked.
So that's what's pictured here; a diagonal heel edge side slip. I could've drawn myself doing some kind of badass rail grind leap into a late double chained flipping reverse 980 with quadruple tail grab (yeah okay I totally made that up) but I thought it'd be more fun to draw myself doing something closer to what I actually managed today. Artistic license has just been taken in a few smaller ways: 1) I was in an indoor ski slope called the Xscape, not out on a pristine powdered mountainside (I live in Milton Keynes and it's April after all), 2) I of course have designed my own coordinated custom gear and board here, because anything worth doing is worth doing with style, and 3) I did not actually get air today, but I wanted to show off the crazy underside of the snowboard I made up. Yes it says 'Rawr.' And the Doran Eirok snowboardy logo on the bottom is from the mind of my friend Kurra; a nod to him since he's largely responsible for getting me interested enough to prod myself into finally giving boarding a try. ^^

*snickers* Artistic license is awesome.
Few things:
1) This pose looks amazing! You look so natural and happy, and just so calmly like "ehh... this is easy".
2) Super-creative clothing; like you even got winter clothing over your wings and tail; even provides for the tail flare! That is so cute.
3) Oh gods, how I would LOVE to be back at the lodge to help you get those boots off afterwards. :3
4) The board is just THAT much better because of the wording on it. :D

That's pretty much how the stance ends up being if you're doing it right... at least the stuff I was doing today, it's all mostly with the lower body. Your upper body you want to just keep upright, shoulders back and back straight. There's remarkably little flailing of the arms, until things start to go wrong anyway. ;) So yeah the default pose for snowboarding does come off looking pretty relaxed and mellow, which I think is fun. ^^
I always have fun designing outfits for myself. >..> Some things like the pattern of the coat was inspired by randomly searching google for various real-world designs and borrowing ideas and colour schemes I liked. And of course I had to dragonify things! The tail you want to be able to move around for balance I figure, but it and especially the wings would get COLD if just left exposed!
And eeeeeeeee... I would so love to have a friendly you waiting back at the lodge, would be so spiffy. ^^
And of course I had to have some fun with the board design. XD I knew I wanted crazy graffiti-looking bright colours, but the RAWR just kinda came to me at the last minute!

Gaaaaaaaaaaaaaah jeez Kurra, with the experiences my household has had lately with tempered glass I would never go anywhere near a tempered glass snowboard. XD The last thing I want it something exploding right under my paws! No matter how thick the boots are. XD
*laughs* Yeah, I think if there were a lot of arm-flailing going on, something is probably going terribly wrong. XD
I love the outfit design - very thoughtful and practical, and honestly yes, you really would have to protect stuff like that. The membranes on the wings would be so thin that freezing would be a near instant problem.

Yeeeeeeeeees flailing is usually a sign of bad things in progress. XD
Thanks! As always I had a lot of fun with the outfit. And yeah the wing membranes especially seemed like they'd need to be kept warm, otherwise they'd radiate away all of your body heat far too effectively. o..o

http://www.evo.com/shop/snowboard/b.....t-heaters.aspx Just paint one of those like a blue dragon shaped splat. CX
Thanks! I had a lot of fun with it. ^^ And yeah, I have tentative plans for drawing dragon snowboarding boots in more detail at some point in the future... they'd be shaped for digitigrade paws, and have a slightly wider toebox to accommodate the larger toes, but functionally would want to be pretty similar to real-world snowboarding boots. Thick and stiff and armoured.
Yay, snowboarding! And indoors too! I've been to the XScape in Milton Keynes but my favourite indoor slope is the SnowDome in Tamworth, due in part to their ski-lift being a travelator instead of that uncomfortable thing they have in MK.
I see digitalpotato mentioned sandboarding! Well... I kinda mentioned sandboarding to him first. Yes, it's real, not fictional. Just not many places to do it in England. The only place I know that offers sandboarding lessons is this place in North Devon. Could have had the chance to do it last time I was in North Devon, but alas! It was rained out! Ever since I've been wishing hard to try sandboarding, my OCs echoing this desire with their love of sandboarding.
Digi is well advised to mention sandboarding though: he lives in Colorado, and they have a great sand dune for sandboarding. Other obvious places to board would be hot and sandy places like Africa, the Middle East or the Emirates, but there's also Monte Kaolino in Germany, an hour away from Nuremberg, an artifical sand mountain and resort.
More accessible in the UK is mountain boarding, something of a middle ground between skateboarding and snowboarding. You can find a good list of mountain boarding centres in the UK here. I'm privelidged to have a mountain boarding centre in the next town over, and I've been there to watch a freestyle mountain boarding championship round. Pretty awesome and inspiring! I've even been boarding there myself... if only for 15 minutes. Must try more this year!

Oo, cool that you've been there too! Xscape is the only one I've ever been to, but if I get into this enough I might have to investigate other places too. The Xscape does actually have a travelator as well that I was using, it's just off to the side on the training slope we were using. That weird button lift thing goes up the main slope but we weren't using that. I imagine I'll have to learn at some point, but until then... yeah, the travelator seems a lot nicer.
And yeah, before Digitalpotato mentioned it I'd never heard of sandboarding! It sounds and looks pretty amazing. I don't know if they do it there at all or not, but in Michigan where I grew up there are some great sand dunes along Lake Michigan, some of which are part of Sleeping Bear Sand Dunes National Lakeshore. I grew up loving the place and going there often. Not sure if it has the topography you'd need for it or not, but I imagine there aren't a lot of places in the world that are suitable. That's neat that there's at least that one place in North Devon if I get curious. :)
Mountain boarding at least I think I have heard of, if only because it was shown in a Top Gear episode once. XD It seems instinctively like it would be incredibly dangerous to me, but then I imagine in reality it isn't -that- much worse than snowboarding... if you fall at high speed doing that, it's not like snow and ice is particularly soft and forgiving all the time either. Man it must be something neat to watch though, that's really cool that you've gotten to see that championship!
Thanks so much for both your interest and all the info! There are so many neat things to try.... O..O

Yeah, I am, of course, referring to the uncomfortable button lifts.
As for mountain boarding, best gear up! Oh! I have a gallery of photos I took here: http://imgur.com/a/s4yp7

I've never yet tried button lifts... not entirely sure I'm looking forward to it. XD
Very cool, thanks for the link! Wow, that's quite a course... I'll really need to check out some more videos of it being done before I can fully convince all parts of my brain that it isn't catastrophically dangerous. XD The helmets and other protective gear at least seem like a sensible idea...
