What Happened To Philippe
by Comus
Philippe B_____, the noted underwater explorer and videographer was hired by a television network to scout out and capture a legendary and elusive dolphin, reputed to be the most intelligent in all the seas, to star in a new children’s TV series.
Philippe studied his charts and set sail for the shallow clear Bahamian waters where he suspected he would find his prey. When he saw a trio of dolphins circling beneath his boat he readied his underwater camera, put on his snorkel, mask and swim fins and dove into the water.
He wasn’t surprised when the dolphins began circling him; he knew they were intelligent, curious animals who communicated and studied their surroundings via sonar-like high-frequency sound waves. He raised his camera to begin taping the dolphins when they suddenly broke into their curious language of chirps and whistles…
The dolphins’ cries grew louder, louder than more intense than he’d ever heard – or felt – them before. He could feel the sound waves bombarding him, feel them vibrating inside him… and feel them changing him!!!
The elastic strap of his face mask snapped and broke as his head grew wide and broad; his nose melted into his face, his nostrils somehow merged and traveled to the top of his head even as his mouth pushed out into a smooth snout… He felt his arms wither, flatten and reform into a pair of flippers… felt his body grow long and sleek… and felt a strange protrusion sprouting from his back…
He heard a water-dulled cracking sound and looked down. Below him lay his precious underwater camera, broken and lying on the sea floor; whatever footage he’d captured of the dolphins was now obliterated. Panicked he tried to kick his legs and swim away from the animals, but their constant circling blocked any escape route.
It was then Philippe realized his legs were moving in unison as if they were pinned together. He looked down and discovered they were merging together, the only evidence they had once been separate a slight depression in the center of his extended torso, a depression that was filling in and vanishing even as he watched. His swim fins slipped off his narrowing feet and he could feel his merging legs slowly forcing his swimsuit further and further down his body… he heard a particularly loud chirping and looked at the dolphins; they seemed to smiling and laughing at him as if they were enjoying his involuntary undressing.
What had been his legs gave a reflexive thrust and Philippe realized he was now fully transformed into a dolphin; the trio had used some uncanny secret ability hidden from the human race to transform him into one of their own kind. I had no right to invade their waters and try to enslave one of them, he realized; I deserved what they have done to me… but this is not a punishment – this is a reward! For I love the ocean as much as they do and now I never have to leave it! As if they understood his thoughts, two of his companions took the swimsuit bunched up around his flukes in their jaws and ripped it apart, freeing Philippe from his final bond with the human race. The four animals swam away, chirping happily to one another…
Three days later Philippe swam to the surface to greet the boat that had come to search for the missing explorer. Hearing his cries, several on board waved and shouted to him. Philippe swam closer to the boat – and felt a heavy net fall out of the boat and over him, entrapping him in its mesh. He felt himself being hoisted up out of the sea, over the boat and lowered into a water-filled tank in its interior…
The dolphin – whom they named ‘Philippe’ in honor of the missing explorer – was an incredibly intelligent animal, smarter than any the trainers had ever worked with before. He learned his tricks effortlessly, and his ultra-successful TV series made him the most popular animal TV star ever. To this day, children still sing his praises:
They call him Flipper, Flipper, faster than lightning,
No-one you see, is smarter than he,
And we know Flipper, lives in a world full of wonder,
Flying there-under, under the sea!
Everyone loves the king of the sea,
Ever so kind and gentle is he,
Tricks he will do when children appear,
And how they laugh when he's near!
We call him Flipper, Flipper, you'll see him smilin'
Right from the start, he'll play it smart.
Beware of Flipper, Flipper, he's such a lover,
You will discover when he steals your heart!
When you're feelin' sad, when you're feelin' blue,
He'll make you glad, yes, that's what he'll do,
And what he can do you'll never believe,
For he's got tricks up his sleeve!
Beware of Flipper, Flipper, he's such a lover,
You will discover when he steals your heart!

What's really weird is that the same day I finished this story and picture, someone did an online comic strip about dolphins having a secret ability to influence people....
