Anyway I'm feelin pretty good about this one.

They were found inside an otter that was basically being eaten alive by the synx from the inside and pulled out + raised by a small team of researchers and they were raised in captivity, which is why they even ave a name (and why they respond to it). Killing Synx is damaging to the surroundings, so it was all about if they could be at least kinda tame.
They spent a long ass time there, learned a good chunk of speech (took a while for them to know how to use it rather than just mimic).

Collar is to prevent them eating anything TOO big.

They outlived the researchers and the project and escaped when they realized their food giving and cattle prod wielding friends weren't feeding it any more, skirted round the bodies of the dead stuff in the research lab, and ended up with my datemate's fursona because they were out getting high as fuck

and then this massive death eel approaches.

If that had been any other Synx Jay would have been eaten alive

Jay feeds them non-intelligent animals but they get delivered frozen, and they were frozen within minutes of death, so once they're mostly thawed out they r good for Bekrel to eat.

Might make a story thing with that :3c who knows.
