gryph000! Excited to finally have a way to show off!
Short character introduction I wrote to post alongside the new art! Just an amateur thing I thought might be fun, as backstories make a character as much as their appearance, to me.
Suurak skimmed over the waves, tilting his head to get a good look at the rushing water beneath him. His specialized eyes tracked the school of fish he has been shadowing, his white underbelly camouflaging him from below, leaving the fish without any indication of the winged predator lurking just above them. The fish were no trivial hunt, they were nearly half the size of the fisherdrake himself, weighing enough to be more than a match for him if he failed to execute his technique properly. But, driven by practice and acute instinct, Suurak had no intention of failing. He expertly spotted prey that drifted too close to the surface, and in a moment furled his wings and dropped like a stone onto the target, readying his claws. His weight carried him into the water, and he immediately sought for purchase on the creature's scales, and hugged to it tightly, closing his eyes in the thrashing water as a buzz ran through him and into the beast, offering it not even a chance to retaliate.
The buildup of natural electricity radiated out from his hide and into his target. The shock locked up the beast's muscles, and before it could get a chance to recover the drake's powerful wings were already pulling him and the fish out of the water. Grasping unerringly, Suurak dashed awkwardly, but steadily to his island of residence and let his meal fall to the rocks that made up his nest. The drop was a gruesome, but effective way to make sure his prey was dead.
Suurak spiraled down to a soft landing, filled with pride of his catch and impressed with himself of the efficiency of the entire ordeal. His species was a majestic one, shining blue of hide with a pristine white underbelly and wielding enough raw strength to snatch their large prey from the churning waves. He, like many of his species made home in the rocky alcoves that dotted the sparse islands amongst the endless seas. With his technique perfected, he would eat his fill with meat to spare. Despite all his physical advantages however, his mind was his greatest tool. Keenly aware that many a drake had gotten ill from the myriad of creatures these large seadwellers manage to ingest, it had become common practice to gut the things and wash them thoroughly in saltwater. The extra steps took a little more time, but over the years it prevented more of the dwindling number of fisherdrakes from dying. The long distances between islands and need for different hunting grounds has led to a sparce, lonely race, only seeing others of their kind briefly and through great effort. Mating was at this point ritualistic and necessary, and teaching young to hunt became a mother's full time occupation after they come of age.
Suurak, after having cleaned his meal sat upon his perch and ate voraciously. All the exertion from the day left him tired and hungry, and the chilly sea winds were no help in getting him to relax. He watched with some fascination as his sun slowly dipped below the horizon, casting its light with a final, beautiful glow before leaving the oceans to darkness. In the long nights his species had evolved a sort of bioluminescence to help identify each other in the pitch black, or even the perilous storms that can appear randomly and quickly. Though, aside from that, the blue drake thought himself rather dashing all lit up. He could see his reflection in his island's stillwaters before, his glowing eyes and ebony horns working well to give a fierce and strong look. He swelled with pride. It took many years, but he felt he was ready to seek out a female. Yet... the seas looked threatening, malicious with their endlessness. He wasn't sure where to go, where to even look to find another island. His life would be left to pure chance... and, fierce as he may look, he wasn't ready to take so deep a dive yet. Maybe if he were just a little stronger, he could make the journey. Perhaps one day soon.
