I decided to post this work-in-progress as a sneak peak at today's comic. My first choice for the last panel was "THAT'S what I call a DRINK!", but thanks to doing a bilingual strip, a crazier alternative creeped into my mind as I pondered the Spanish version.
I'm still deciding if the ferret is male or female, but at the moment I'm thinking female just because my comic has been a sausage-fest the past year. Also, it might keep new readers from guessing that Kenny is either gay or female, even though he doesn't know who spiked his drink.
I considered putting devil horns on the ferret, but considering it only appears in one panel, people might think the ferret actually has horns. Temporary cartoon horns always appear, then disappear. One panel doesn't allow that. Not even a puff of smoke from the horns will make it look like they're appearing. Dotted lines... maybe, but those work best on bigger things. Plus, they're often used for invisible things that are actually there. Or coupons.
I think I'll keep my sketch-lettering of "Hot Sauce". I like how I wrote it. It's easily darkened.
Sometimes I wonder if I should stop at the sketching stage, because it sells the joke already. But, I also plan on selling prints of my comics, so I go all the way to the coloring stage. I'm hoping to make some background objects as copy-paste sprites to easily add depth and character to the background. Things like holographic signs and trash cans. Maybe in a year I'll have 3D backgrounds!
