The sigiled stone door clicked and rumbled, it opened, slowly.
After he entered the room he was immediately disappointed. It must have been looted already, or more likely, a false chamber designed to trick would-be grave robbers. He preferred the term “explorer” but the ancient builders would not have agreed. The room itself contained a few load-bearing pillars, and walls of inscriptions too worn and ancient to read, and in set out from the walls, two identical statues.
The statues might be worth something, but they would be far too difficult to lift. He touched the polish obsidian of the nose of one of the jackal-statues, clearly meant to stand for Anubis.
As he took his hand away an unsettling feeling shook him. The torch in his hand flickered, and the extinguished sconces on the wall blazed to life. He swallowed hard, and backed away, and made for the door.
Behind him, the eyes of the statues began to glow, and he felt himself turned around, against his will. Something had entered him, and it was controlling his motions!
But deep down he knew, it wasn’t finished. A wave of warmth washed over him, and his clothing began to lift, and warp. He could feel his body getting stronger as his clothes dissolved. As another mind awoke within his, and soon his old life ebbed away.
He smiled as his face pushed out into a canine muzzle and black fur spread across his body. His ears sharpened, and a tail swished behind him Nails sharpened into claws as his feet arched. Power trailed from his eyes, as the last of the human’s garments reverted to the god’s finery.
Anubis extinguished the torch and walked for the first time in thousands of years. He touched one of his ka statues knowingly. His craftsmen had done an excellent job, in those days of Kehm, back before the power of the Pharoahs was broken. He smiled and turned to the steps, he was free now, and he had much work to do.
