"Bullpup" configuration rifles have the trigger/pistolgrip/etc forward of the magazine housing. Basically, this increases the barrel length relative to the weapon's overall length, which allows the weapon to be shorter, lighter, and more maneuverable, and yet also to have increased muzzle velocity and stability. I believe that the Steyr AUG was one of the first weapon to be manufactured in this fashion, and it is still readily used, and reliable. Enfield's L85 bullpup is one serious weapon with its 5.56x45mm NATOs! 20.4in barrel length, yet still quite manageable.
