I was looking around for something unrelated
on my computer and found this from 2006, which
I see I didn't release on any albums from that time
or later, not sure why I sat on it.
Anyway, it features vocals I picked up from the
website ccMixter, which is a place for people
to upload musical bits and pieces specifically for
other folks to take and use for commercial free
purposes. This is much more music oriented than
the Freesound Project, which is just about field
recording more generally. You'll find a lot of
random beats and free verse and aspiring singers
and so on on ccMixter. Often, if a vocalist is
popular, lots of people will take the same a cappella
track and make their own songs with it. Or vice
versa with instrumentals.
Lots of talented folks there, and due to the nature
of the site, everybody there is interested in
collaboration. I made a bunch of stuff soon after
finding out about it. I think I was waiting to
accumulate enough of it to release an album, but then
got distracted or something, dunno.
Anyway, I made two tracks with Ms. Vybe who has a
delivery that was fun to play with and was making
really personal "confessional" music that wasn't
just the usual amateur hip-hop braggadocio.
This features the initial hook to the incredibly
precious Gymnopédies. From the wiki:
"Published in Paris starting in 1888, are three
piano compositions written by French composer
and pianist Erik Satie ... the Gymnopédies are regarded
as the precursors to modern ambient music"
Erik Satie was an amazing guy, for serious.
Really wonderful and wacky and ahead of his time :)
Anyway, Ms. Vybe stuffs a lot of imagery into a couple
minutes, so here are the lyrics for those who want to
follow along.
