Sometimes you do crazy things for love.

Shining Armor attempted to comfort Cadance in her despair, but ultimately he was unable to save her from her corruption. To protect her from Amore, they both fled from the Crystal Empire, but it quickly became apparent that Cadance was too far gone to be around any normal ponies any longer, forcing them to live in solitude. Despite her newfound grotesque appearance, Shining Armor's love for her remains, and he dutifully watches guard over her to ensure that no further harm can come to her, and in the hopes that she may be restored someday. Equestria has become a much more dangerous place, however, and his prowess in fighting and magic aren't entirely sufficient to keep him alive; he has already lost one arm and eye, but fortunately Cadance has been able to supply him with replacements, and still he fights on. It is likely that if he continues he may completely cease to be the stallion he once was.

As with Cadance, the backstory for Shining Armor above was more or less established, I only had difficulty coming up with a design. It was decided that rather than being a fully transformed pony, like Rarity and the others, or even an altered thrall, like Sombra, he would act as a guardian serving his chosen "mistress". Perhaps he could still have a more monstrous appearance though, given sufficient time to be transformed.
