Well look at it this way: its a way of keeping the small-business artist safe from large companies/groups buying up cheap adoptables and using them as a company mascot, mass printing logos, cards, icons etc and making CRAZY amounts of money off of your design while you sold it for like $10~
If someone wanted to use a character for commercial purposes, they could commission me to draw one for them, and the price would be worked out so that I understand that they will make more money off the character than I would, but that I price it accordingly to that. Usually if someone just wants to use the character for like their youtube vids or what-not I'm fine with it; there are other small businesses I'm all about yah! Use it if it'll help yah out! But they should ask first; you should always ask an artist if its okay to make a financial gain off of something that was meant to be sold for personal purposes to people online. Generally a lot of people already undersell themselves, but imagine being taken advantage of by a large corporation to get the easy/cheap way out of finding a mascot by just buying some small-time artists design and using that.
I suppose not only is it a respect thing, but also to keep me from being taken advantage of~ I hope that helps a bit lol, sorry if I rambled
