The world once lived under two disciplines, the craft and technology. Those that practiced the craft followed twelve disciplines, each a different style of magic. As was the legacy, each style had a master to train and oversee the followers of each discipline. For ages the two ways of living had survived side by side. As technology grew the civilizations began to keep to themselves more and more, and contact between the groups began to dwindle. Those that supported technology developed powerful weapons and advanced industrialization. In time, their technological development exceeded their energy sources and they began to look elsewhere for their power requirements.
Their scientists developed a way to tap into the Talwyn crystals, and slowly both sides began to move towards an inevitable conflict...

It's kind of funny how often this kind of conflict between magic and technology seems to arise in fiction. It's a theme I rather enjoy, as it does set up a nice conflict for a civilization to follow and there are all kinds of different ways it can go. Knowing you, I have no doubt you'll come up with some very creative ideas to go along with it. But I do find it interesting that both sides are usually presented in conflict rather than in harmony with each other.
That being said, I don't think I'd want to have to fight against either of these ladies. But especially Lauren, who looks especially imposing here, with that wall of water poised over her head! It does make for one heck of an impressive picture, though!

No doubt it's pretty clear it's a theme I enjoy as well. My original ideas were somewhat less coherent with less reason for the world to exist, but when I started rebooting my universe I needed a central conflict. Now this wasn't the reason for the war, mind you, which turned out to be energy requirements, because people fight for resources, rights, or other things....
However, some of my favorite universes have been high in technology but possessing characters with abilities that look cool and create interesting scenarios to play in. I'm a fan of what I call realistic fantasy. Powers exist, but they're not end all and be alls nor do they solve every problem. They face the same issues we do, they just do it with powers. The character drama still exists as do the problems they face. They're just neater with water powers. Since I knew I wanted Lauren to have water powers from day one of this new universe it seemed clear what side she'd be on, then I just started developing it and in time the concept of the crystals formed and from there the conflict and then the layers began to build on top of them. It's not to say they can't exist in harmony, but it does make for an interesting cultural divide.
It's worth noting a normal user could not do what she's doing right now. Lauren has a direct link to the powers they command, so she can do far more than any crystal user and for longer. Even her powers have limits of course, but as you can see here she's rather angry.
BTW, this was what I was thinking we could do instead of filling up the front page with a lot of text, like my current profile. I think it'll be simpler if we can make it like this, with the links leading to project pages for news, info, and related comics and stories on an easy to find and simple to navigate page. In time I hope to pick an eye catching image and create one for all our projects.
