weave(s):
3D Byzantine
material(s)
Aluminum and brass
The Byzantine weave has many names including: King's Link, Birdcage, Bird's nest, Fool's Dilemma, Idiot's Delight and of course Idiot's Box. So considering this boxy cube..thing is made of Idiot's Box I find that somewhat amusing. Some people argue as to why it has these names. Some say it is because it is such a simple weave. Others say it is because of the mental degradation that comes from trying to figure out how it is made.
This interesting thingamabob is another statuary work made out of chainmaille. It is a boxy...thing made from a pretty basic weave made three dimensional.
The odd thing about making this weave 3D is you will never be able to get a nice clean sealed cube There will always be some form of loose end on one of its faces as you can see from the other angle (see previous) each face has a differant look to it. So in a wierd way you will never be able to make a perfect "cube" What is also odd is "flaps" on the corners can actually slide and move...as to its uses I have yet to decide.
I was far too lazy to continue adding layers to a purely experimental piece that has zero chance of making me money. Otherwise it could be much larger and I could change its shape slightly.

Why yes of course you could. In general you can do that with most chain if you know what you are doing. As to what I would put on them and why I would do so is the real question...I will think of something some day....maybe make some basin with a cube dangling in the air while held aloft by chains...I dunno.
It's just over two inches tall and three inches wide from this angle. So it is about the size of a fist. It could be made larger or smaller by using differant size rings and changing the number of rows as well.

Wicked....xD
I love the byzantine weave. I have a horrible photo of a pretty nice bracelet using a variant of
this pattern in my gallery....
This, on the other hand, would make either an excellent ritual focus, desktop chiotchke, or
attached to a chain I bet it'd make a decent weight for a flail >_>
Personally I'd use it as a ritual focus, something to direct the mind toward a particular idea.

Hehe yeah I seem to be collecting a lot of random chainmaille nicknakcs that I have made on my shelves. Mmm not so good for a flail, I think more along the lines of a weighted one of these of decent size http://www.furaffinity.net/view/1000689/
Thinking inside the box then eh? I'm just teasing. This would make an interesting focus. Though a lot of things in my life do revolve around rings and spheres (was that a pun?) this is not the sort of thing I tend to focus on for a ritual.
