(from the 1977 Star Wars catalog)
"Now kids can see STAR WARS movies with their very own viewer! Exciting scenes of STAR WARS action. Crank fast or slow. The super-8 film never tangles! No Batteries needed."
Back in 77 the only way to see Star Wars in motion was on very expensive film reels or in theaters. But there was an other way and that was the Kenner Star Wars Movie Viewer.
Despite its major popularity, Kenner only produced four individually packaged cassettes, and the fifth, May The Force Be With You, which came packaged with the Viewer. There's no real answer known to the general public as to why there were so few cassettes, but we speculate that when the film took off like it did, Lucasfilm and/or Fox pulled the plug on the cassettes to encourage people to continue to fill theater seats.
With the exception of the Star Wars logo sticker, this model was the exact same as the Six Million Dollar Man released version from 1975.
there only 4 movie cassettes where made under the first Star Wars in 77 and they are:
1) Destroy Death Star
2) Danger At The Cantina
3) Battle In Hyperspace
4) Assault On Death Star

Never heard of that particular item. But, that would have been a big thing, back then. It's rather mind blowing to think about the advancement arc the world has gone though.
First off...No Internet. (Well...there was one. It was military in nature and only the choicest of colleges had the dot-coms. ;P )
You would have had to have been rather rich or dedicated to see a movie or a television show on your schedule. Because, you'd either have to obtain the reels of film that made up a movie and literally set up a home theater or own a machine that made audio/video onto magnetic tape. (Like on a Reel-to-Reel machine. Although, Betamax was trying to be born for more of a home based medium.) Which meant you had to stick to a schedule to really watch anything. And, the choices were very limited. Plus, color was a premium. At least, you could have the freedom to listen to many music genres that you could buy, thanks to LP's, 8-Tracks and audio tapes.
On the video game front, there was this great machine that could bring a wider selection then just Pong, Pong or...Pong to your TV, known as the Atari VCS. Else, there was a wide variety of board games to work with. Or just sit down and read a book. Do a jigsaw puzzle. Or some other distraction of a classic nature. You know...like hold a conversation. (The phone at least was an option. Land line based. (Because only the super rich had car phones. (A literal phone inside a car. Couldn't be used outside the car.)))
There was always shopping...during daylight/evening hours. Cash and carry. Or write on a piece of paper called a check. Kind of a 'promise that you actually had money with a bank to pay for that purchase' deal. The credit card existed. But, worked in much the same way. How the world didn't go bankrupt on such a system of trust...
In other words, we've really got a better world happening. Enjoy everything about the 21'st century.
