“You’ve been seeing a lot of that Terran lately.”
Varan spared the kam a glance. “Yes, I have, Kirian. Is there a problem?” Her tail snaked up to drape over her shoulder, the bony spur polished and gleaming in the overhead lights.
Kirian resisted the urge to step back, even though the tailspur was at eye level. The threat was implicit, but he was certain she wouldn’t hit him. “Aka, you’d be the best judge of that. Her scent’s all over you.” He cocked his head slightly. “Are you two sharing a bed?”
The vir smiled. “There are times, yes. Sometimes hers, sometimes mine.”
“Twining tails?”
“No.” At the flat negative the kam took a step back, tongue clucking against the roof of his mouth in disbelief. “I want a friend, Kirian, and I want to make friends, with her.” Her tail slid from her shoulder. “I . . . I had the nightmare again, while sleeping with her.”
The male lowered his voice. “About your grandfather? The one who spaced himself?”
She gestured affirmatively. “After I calmed down, I had to tell her.” Despite herself, she shuddered and didn’t flinch as he embraced her reassuringly. “You’re the only other I’ve told about it, and I still can’t help seeing it all again in my dreams.” She shuddered again and covered her eyes with one hand, as if trying to shut away the childhood memory. “They . . . my parents told me that it was an accident, but that’s not possible. There’s no way that could have been an accident, with all the safeguards . . . “ She sniffled back mucus and his tail joined his arms in hugging her.
“How did Meredith react? To the nightmare, and the memory?” Kirian asked softly.
Varan swallowed hard. “She held me until the shaking stopped, and held me while I told her. She was just there for me, and afterward she had something called ‘tea’ while I had a glass of henal. We went back to bed, and . . . “
“Yes?”
Varan met Kirian’s gaze and held it. “She held my hand.”
It felt like a full cycle before Kirian could say anything.

This is the kind of prompt response I enjoy a lot. You've taken a scene that any reader can tell is part of a larger story and given it just enough of a tie-in to the prompt topic to be relevant without being obvious. As others have already said, the indications of a growing relationship are present without being loudly proclaimed.
I love subtlety, despite being pretty much blind and deaf to it in real life.
