Why that -looks- fake is probably quite simple. See, in order to ensure that it does not rot from water, one has to treat it multiple times with a certain coat. It prevents wood warping, and makes it waterproof.
Also: painting the wood to look stained is sometimes a far better alternative then the gnarled color of pale wood.
Either way. Impressive hammer. What's the damage on it? I'd say 2d8?
