A scythe can be quite wieldy under proper expertise. The scythe a medieval farmer would've used would've been shorter. Ad most metals don't break too easily, last I heard. Also, about originality. Where in the nine hells have you seen a bounty hunter with a scythe?

im guessing you dont know much about fantasy stories or much about using scythes as weapons, think of the quarter staff, it is just a long sturdy stick of wood, yet a person who knows how to use one can defeat someone with a sword, so a scythe cannot be thrown out as a weapon

Guns pay little to no heed in my stories. He has a gun, and he's damned good with it, but you don't get paid if your target is dead as a bounty hunter (with exceptions). Disarm their weapons with a few well placed bullets and there you go. Swords aren't lame, a lot of my characters use swords. Thing is a scythe can be used just as effectively as a weapon as a sword can, if not better. As could an axe, mace, flail, etc. As for rationality, in fantasy, you can pretty much throw that away :P you can try to come up with a rational way to fight, but once magic gets involved... it gets screwy.
