Tomorrow it's Malaysia's 52nd Merdeka Day, or independence day. On August 31st, 1957, after 200 years of British colonial rule (with an interrupted 5 year period under the Japanese), the "Jalur Gemilang", or Stripes of Glory was raised as the British Union Jack was lowered for the last time at Merdeka Stadium. Our first prime minister, Tunku Abdul Rahman, chanted, "Merdeka! Merdeka! Merdeka!" and the Federation of Malaya was born (it would be changed to Malaysia a few years later).
Since then, Malaysia has transformed from a rural, rubber-tapping and tin-mining nation to become an economic powerhouse in Southeast Asia with an industrious, export and trade-driven economy with a thriving electronics, IT, automobile, petroleum and biotechnology industries. Kuala Lumpur has changed from a sleepy mining town to a humming, gleaming metropolis.
This is a day when Malaysians look back at how far we've come and how each year we are getting closer and closer to our goal of being a fully developed nation by 2020. The thing that symbolizes this development more than anything else is the Petronas Towers, which dominate the KL skyline and made Malaysia known around the world and the first building in 100 years to take the title of "tallest building" away from America. They have become the symbol of modern Malaysia
I had a lot of fun and a feeling of patriotism doing this piece. Johairi and Me show off our patriotism by holding up the Jalur Gemilang in front of The Petronas Towers. I got the pic off google but I still love how this piece came out.
Selamat Hari Merdeka
Happy Independence Day

Thanks Buck. Yeah, it is funny how that works. Singapore's another case where when a country becomes independent it prospers. But the African British colonies never prospered, unfortunately. Poor Africa.
I've noticed that for an American, you are quite knowledgeable of the world outside of the united states. I don't think many Americans can name KL as Malaysia's capitol. Did you know all of this beforehandor did you start to research Malaysia after meeting me?
Usually when I speak to Americans online they're your stereotypical ignorant Americans. I asked one where English came from and he said "English was born in America, then those Brits took it and added all those vowels to it!". One of my friends chatted to an American (from Colorado) on runescape and he, after learning my friend was in Malaysia, asked "Is that a state in the southwest?" after saying it's in Asia he said "oh, your black, then" Ugh, seriously.
I'm glad the Americans on FA are a lot smarter on average than those elsewhere on the Internet

Well, some of Africa has prospered, some hasn't. Sometimes it takes time.
I was aware of the city of Kuala Lumpur but I didn't know if it was Malaysia's capital. I've learned a lot about Malaysia since meeting you. I recently learned about the political divisions of the island of Borneo. I'd never understood what all was going on there!
Well... I did get a lot of education growing up. My family values education very highly, and I have both a college degree and a post-graduate degree. I also had a chance to spend a year of college studying in Europe which was enormous for learning about the world outside the States.
I think Americans do have trouble being ignorant of the world outside, but that's just because our world is so BIG. You can travel 3000 miles in America and still speak the same English, use the same money, talk to people who vote in the same elections. It can be hard for Americans to experience another country since it usually demands either huge road trips or long flights. But I don't think Americans are any less educated than anyone else in the world. I think it's just that we have such cheap internet access here, anyone can get online and chat with you no matter how ignorant they are!
I've met plenty of ignorant Europeans during my year studying in Germany. Ignorance is all over the world. It's hardly an American thing.

OMG i was just about to say they're just an excuse to put on crap TV. Great minds, and all that. (But seriously, i love wallace and gromit)
As far as i can tell, they're a holiday for the people who have to be at work even during national holidays - like banks for example. They're usually issued as a celebration for something that isn't quite important enough to have it's own holiday. Like the Prime Minister's dog getting lost then coming home safely or something...

Damn!
The last i heard of it was that it's actually not that much of a threat. Apparently, normal Flu kills more people a year than swine flu has in england, but because it's got more news coverage and a fancy moniker to it, people are panicking. I'm really not bothered about it. I've had a bad case of flu before, and I nearly died from that. I ain't worried.
