I don't do humor much, because I'm not that good at it, but I think this is passable for satire. I'd like to offer up a parable for Election Day which is one part whimsy, one part cynicism, and a dash of absurdity. I can't claim the idea as my own though. I was reminded today of something I'd read in a newsgroup or forum post a few years back in either the 2000 0r 2004 election.
They used the same idea of the mice electing cats, and the silly notion of electing a mouse to lead them instead, but it wasn't presented in story fashion. So I borrowed the idea, because it's a fun one, and spun it into a quick bit of flash fiction. I tend to be longwinded in my writing, so it was nice to work at something short and sweet.
Yes, our politicians and leaders are far from perfect, and there are many cases where elections come to choosing the lesser of two weasels. Still, as disapointed and cynical as I can get, we are lucky to have a chance to at least have a semblance of having our voice heard. Like the recent elections, tomorrow's races look to be very close. The outcomes of these midterm elections are likely to be very important. So, whatever side of the fence you're on, do your civic duty and get out and vote tomorrow. Slackers will be the first to be eaten... (*chuckle*)

Thanks for the comment. I don't get much feedback on stories, so it's nice to hear.
Heh. Yeah, I admit that one of the problems with the allegory that once in office, the mice would also be revaled to be cats. Either that, or they'd end up becoming them, by the machinations of the system.

Have you considered that maybe this system (or any coercive system) is morally wrong?
You might want to check out www.freedomainradio.com if you're interested. They make the case that since violence is wrong, it is wrong for the government to use coercion to compel you to do anything (because if you don't do what is dictated, you will be "arrested" and "imprisoned"; in our everyday lives, we understand that committing violence against, kidnapping and locking people in our basement is wrong. Why should it be right for some people but not others?)
Of course, the inevitable conclusion is that the government never really cared about you, except as cattle (which you seem to understand pretty well). It's worth a thought or two :).
