When I came to the CIA several years ago, and saw the local environment was perfect snake territory, I promised myself I'd catch one before leaving.
That was nearly three years ago. The few opportunities I got were ones that slipped away. There was a Norther Racer about a week ago that I almost nabbed, along with a Black Snake, but they were quick little buggers.
This garter snake I snagged though. I was walking up to the wine store and saw it in the grass by the school parking lot.
Tempermental little bugger! Nipped me a few time while I was holding it.

Well no to him you were some big predator trying to eat it. Nipping is their only defense aside from some verieties of garters that use av ery strong musk scent that they secret when molested in any way. These guys are in abundance her in western washington. Nice pic btw.
Cool snake, and I second failcakes assertion about yer face. Sankes are awesome. I have caught and handled racers, bulls, rubber boas, and garters. I have only been nipped and bitten by garters and baby bulls. All the others first instincts were to flee into the rocks from where they came from. The most coll snakes I have handled were the bulls and Rubber Boas. I have even seen two rattlesnakes in the wild in eastern Washington but I was not about to go playing around with them. Thanks for sharing with us have most excellent day!
As a tip for the lizards in FL, since I worked there for my externship and caught a ton of them:
Approach them from an angle that they can't see you from.
If they're sunning on a pole or tree, memorize where they're at from a distance and approach with the object blocking you from their vision. When you get within arm's reach (quietly, of course. They've got sharp ears) whip your hand around to where you remembered them at.
Just bring your hand around with enough speed that you can nab them, but not so hard that they're injured.

That's a pretty snake! Lovely markings, too! He seems to be a variety of Garter that I've never seen before. I'm mostly just familiar with the slinky Red Garters from back home... There's a major breeding-are near where I'm from, a place called Narcisse in Manitoba, where the Red Garter lives and migrates to in order to breed. Imagine literally hundreds of thousands of snakes all massing in huge mating-balls, trying to get a little somethin' somethin' with the ladies... Very cool to see.
I can picture it, yeah. Most of the ones I caught back in MD were the docile and easy-going type too.
This one though...Nope! Latched into me a few times and got a bit of blood trickling down my fingers from those tiny little teeth they have.
It was also cute the way it behaved towards the camera. Even though I was the one holding it, when my buddy went to take the shot the snake immediately focused on the camera, and all but ignored my hand. That's why in the picture it's looking straight ahead.

D'aw!!! What a beautiful snake!
It's been a while since i've gone out "herping"...blah. Used to do it a lot when I was younger in GA. Usually caught Northern and Midland water snakes at the local park. Was great fun scaring people who didn't think there was any snakes-but it all ways bugged the ever loving hell out of me when people killed them before I could catch them and move them somewhere else. I used to tell people I was majoring in biology and it was illegal to kill the nonvenmous ones-at least, it was...I am not so sure on the specifics anymore. Probably still the same though, considering they still do not allow corn snakes as pets in GA, even if they are captive bred which is really retarded in my opinion since I own some myself.
But yeah, that was a long winded...thing. ANYWHo, again, beautiful catch! I have never caught a garter snake-have been given garter snakes others found but never got one myself. LOL
And bitey...hehehe. I've caught a couple black racers before- such angry ANGRY snakes. LOL So pretty though.

That's not something I'd want to do unless I knew the snake wasn't venomous...except that I'm definitely no snake expert so I treat them all like they are D:. But if somebody had a pet snake that was ok I'd be excited to hold it. Nice job catching it, though! I imagine the small ones are extra fast.
Garter snakes are pretty distinctive, so they're easy to recognize. And they're non-venomous.
How non-venomous, you ask?
I was more amused than injured when it did this: http://www.furaffinity.net/view/2795488/

if the swoon was....maybe...directed towards me, the snake had other opinions: https://www.furaffinity.net/view/2795488/
