It's kinda reassuring to know that we hairless types are the only ones with the strange predilection for pretending to be something we're not.
Although I was really struck by that line in Zootopia when Nick claimed his "son" wanted to be an elephant when he grew up. That one comment insinuates that it happens in their universe, so why not in others?

The boy himself reminds me of that painting you commissioned (the fennec kit with the goggles and flying cap) and I wouldn't be surprised if that was at least part of the inspiration.
I think the only way not to come off as odd or weird to anyone would be at the cost of one's own authenticity. As long as you're true to yourself, there will be more than a few oddities and that is, I think for the most part, beneficial, it makes us unique.
