Li'l Mickey is a platform adventure game developed by Universal Interactive and published by Sony Computer Entertainment. The game was released for the PlayStation on February 19, 1997. The game stars the titular character, Mickey, a small Jack Russell/Dachshund mix, as she investigates paranormal mysteries in her neighborhood and the surrounding woods. The game is a narrative driven collectathon platformer with large, detailed levels containing multiple interactive key characters. Collectibles called "clues" must be collected and given to the appropriate characters to progress through the game, but other, optional collectibles include toy mice and miniature milk cartons.
Li'l Mickey was developed in an effort to test how well the PlayStation's emerging audience would take to a game with "cutesy" graphics and a darker story, as the game was originally described as a dark comedy with fantasy elements.[1] The game's critical reception was mixed to positive. It was praised primarily for its engaging storyline and gameplay as well as for presenting the environment from the perspective of a dog[2], but was most frequently criticized for the juxtaposition of the art direction and the plot, which involves paranormal activity, kidnapping, ghost possession, and murder.[3] Critic Roger Cliffghast once described the game as "a unique, bizarre, sometimes even poignant lark, but with too many cartoony antics for most players over 18 and too many dead doggies for the little kiddies."[4]
The game suffered from poor sales and a short manufacturing run and, due to its scarcity, is currently considered by many video game enthusiasts to be lost media[citation needed]. Both legitimate and illegitimate copies of the game are notoriously difficult to find for sale, and mint condition copies have allegedly not resurfaced on popular vending sites such as eBay and Amazon for many years. Illegally distributed ROMs of the game are equally as hard to find, and most don't contain any actual gameplay. Pirates of the game frequently claim that the ROMs they have managed to acquire will not play past the menu screen, at which point the game will loop an FMV clip of a dog skull with bulging purple eyes clacking its teeth and saying "Try Again" in a man's voice.[5]
