~The Story So Far~
"...We now meet Duras’kò [SURNAMES WITHHELD], a young Folúpi who grew up in the city of Korsin, capital of the United Republic for as long as he can remember. While he much like everyone else had been taught how Archduke Immortal Róçtok brought power to the people from the High Royals, he sees it all for what it truly is: Róçtok is no saviour nor “Man of the People”, but a corrupt megalomaniac only out for himself - “You say we feast when I see our people starve”; Róçtok is no leader, but a ruthless dictator - “fall in line or be branded a traitor”. He knows that anyone who dares show dissent is removed from society. And while he has had one or two run-ins with the law for doing so, he knows that while he dangerously toes the line - “I pretend to know the words but I sing a different song” - others aren’t so lucky; one such person being his mother, who is currently serving an unknown number of years in prison for publicly voicing her displeasure at how Archduke Immortal Róçtok was leading the country.
In reaction to his mother’s arrest, Duras’kò has banded together a group of other disillusioned Folúpása in an underground militia, bent on overthrowing Archduke Immortal Róçtok and reinstating the High Royals as leaders – an ironic twist of fate for the Archduke Immortal indeed. He is all too aware of the consequences of public dissent however, and urges his fellow members to keep quiet - “we pretend to know the words but we sing a different song” - at least, until the time is right."
Lyrics:
[VERSE 1]
"As the sun begins to set on this town
A young man looks up at the mighty castle walls
Turning ‘round, he sees a world pacified;
Comatose and unaware of it all..."
Don’t you people see?
This is not what we envisioned for our land
The promises they made
They took no time to break and say it was part of the plan
[VERSE 2]
Your picture on the telescreen tells a lie
How you hypnotised us all seems bizarre:
Looking ‘round I see a homeland defiled
You say we feast when I see our people starve
If you want me to beg
I may bow my head when I am forced to sing along
But you don’t listen, though:
I pretend to know the words but I sing a different song
[CHORUS]
So join me in my chorus:
They will not ignore us anymore
(If he was fighting for us, he’d give back what he stole)
So be careful what you wish for:
Your harmony has d̸̀͠i̵͞s̵̢̧̀ć͟o̷͜r͞ḑ̶̛͡, I’m not afraid
To show that this war is one worth fighting for
[VERSE 3]
Where’s this prosperous nation you had described?
When I see our people live in poverty?
I don’t want the world, just what was prescribed:
You promised us gold just to throw it away
We hear it every time:
"We must fall in line or be branded a traitor"
But you own the media;
You are no leader, just a ruthless dictator
[VERSE 4]
So like a virus I will spread through this town
Both my message and a call to arms
With your help we will soon take back the crown
Return it to the ones who are most deserved
Soon we will resist
I promise you this; your days are counting down
Starting whisper quiet
Assembling our choir, and soon we shout out loud
{rpt CHORUS}
[VERSE 5]
And so my voice has grown;
We pretend to know the words but we sing a different song
And when the time is right
We’ll begin our strike to finally right your wrongs
{rpt CHORUS}

Doing some more experimentation with odd-time signatures. Back when I was initially writing Decet Hostium, I actually wanted the time signature of the music to signify which character (on rather, faction)'s perspective the lyrics were being sung from; Ultimately that plan never happened, but I'm committed to bring it back here.
