I can't do better then Disney, but all that discussion about how The Lion King was better 2D animated because in 3D it's expressionless and boring got me thinking of what the remake would look like if instead of hyperrealism, Disney had combined realism and cartoony proportions. The character design of the original TLK is really good, after all.
So here's a little prince. I sculpted his entire body as opposed to just his head/upper chest like I do with a lot of my 2D/3D hybrid pieces, but you can't see a lot of it. Mostly used him as an excuse to learn normal mapping and clone painting. A time consuming piece, but fun.

One of the problems with photorealistic styles is that they become outdated and are pretty dime a dozen, highly stylized media tends to stand the test of time and are way more memorable, least in my opinion.
The best examples I can give are all video game related, since that's more my forte, but heck, Disney themselves are proving it with their live action adaptations, they may look pretty now, but if they say, had a more unique look to them (such as your rendition which isa solid 10/10) it's more striking, allows more emotion to be conveyed and will hold up better even as technology improves.
Rant over, but goddamn, this is some insane work.

i think there's a lot of truth to that, especially wrt video games. but especially when it comes to film, as blown away as i am by the technology being used these days in animation, the film itself isn't visually distinct from the pictures you see in natgeo, let alone anything on a film screen. that's why the original has withstood the test of time and still has a widespread fandom utilizing its art style like 20+ years later whereas the live action version will likely just be a fun little novelty we all gawk at before putting it away forever.
thank you so much!
