The Armorican Peninsula is a strange and wondrous place, a land full of magic and mystery, where the mortal realm of Bedouar and the timeless vastness of Faerie coexist side by side, the great veil ripped apart by uncontrollable magic, causing time and space to collapse into disarray. Unearthly fog rolls in, cutting off travelers from where they came and pure magical chaos rolls across the region in great storms. Fortune can be found in the borders of Faerie to the brave and the lucky, death for the foolish.
The treacherous coast of the region, the Ar Mor Bras, is no stranger to these twists of fate, home to the lost city of Ys-Beneath-the-Waves and its accursed princess, Ahes Dahut. Throughout the ages, some individuals find themselves caught in the whirlpool of magic surrounding this mystical site, and are drawn in by the phantom bells of the sunken city and the enchanting, enticing song of those trapped by its curse...
This Mermay, I've undertaken a project to design several characters, each based off of a traditional D&D Class, as they may appear in the world of Kroashent. I am tying to really go out on character design this month, so please let me know what you think of these characters and their written stories!
A wandering warrior finds himself a captive of a brutal gang of slavers setting sail along the treacherous Ar Mor Bras, where the ship is caught in the middle of a devastating and powerful wyldstorm, a hurricane of unchecked chaos and magikal energy.
Author's Notes:
When I set out to start this project, of all the classes, the Monk gave me the hardest time. While many of the D&D classes draw in some form from tropes of medieval European fantasy, which can be easily adapted to the Celtic world of Kroashent, the Monk typically draws from Eastern tropes of Wuxia fantasy and east-Asian tradition. There isn't really a great one on one comparison to a western source. The two closest (either a spiritual/religious angle or a unarmed brawler) are covered well by other classes and neither fully compares to the influence.
In the end, I decided instead to double down on the Asian influence, casting our hero as a wandering warrior, searching the lands and learning new fighting styles, while occasionally breaking out in heroics along the way. The character, and their story, are very much inspired by Samurai Jack.
While Kroashent mainly draws inspiration from western and Eurocentric mythologies, histories and cultures, it would be a lie to say that the influence of Anime and JRPGs is not present. Rather, they are integral sources of inspiration, to the point where I think that the "ideal" adaptation of Kroashent would be an anime series.
Additionally, (and this is cool), there actually was a discovery of a 6th century Buddha statue in the Viking town of Helgö, which I why I chose to set Akihiro's story during this time period. Check it out here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Helg%C3%…
