I commissioned this piece at Anthrocon 2018.

Much of the bookkeeping at the Academy is still done by hand. It’s not that computers aren’t available, but rather such things are seen as less Noble – and avoiding electronic records makes it that much harder for outsiders to audit them.

Each new devotee gets a line in the official ledgers, with their name, Hue, arrival date, age, and, eventually, date of death. Danielle, the lupine headmistress, takes pride in carefully hand lettering every new devotee’s entry herself.

Another file, with their full name, birth date, and other relevant official identifiers from their places of origin, is likewise created; these files are then put away in a box and never opened again. Devotees are known only by their first name and Hue; their birth as far as the Academy is concerned is the date of their arrival. Anything before then does not exist.
