The summer Jack was born was one of the hottest on record, tucked in safely within the green healthy brush was his mother panting away as she was hot despite the cool shade provided from the trees above. After a few long hours of labor, soft tender cries filled the air. Four healthy cubs were sucking away at their mama hoping to get the most milk, little paws swinging about at each others blind faces to try to get the nipple they were after, despite having a perfect one already giving them milk. Jack took smack after smack to the face from his siblings but refused to give up his spot.
Sweet little purrs escaped the chunky boy as the weeks went on. Chunkers may have been stubborn with his food but he didn't feed as often as his sister and two brothers so it all leveled out in the end, Plus once all of their eyes were opened his siblings could land better shots. It was also good to note that Jack didn't care enough to fight back, being chunky enough after all.
The two month mark was approaching them rather quickly. All the cubs were pouncing about, full of energy and spunk, using their mom as a jungle gym. With a low roar revealing her impatience she got up from the ground to begin their journey home. The black tip of her tail acted as a flag that guided her cubs in a neat little line, almost like cute little duckies.
Soft wisps of air helped keep them cool while making their ways across the tan stained plains. Their peaceful journey being abruptly interrupted by the sound of a cracking laughter.
Hyenas!
If she was with her lion pride then a pack hyenas would be no threat at all to her or her babies. Tucked down underneath her was Jack along side his siblings just hissing away as they got surrounded by the cackling pack. With deep rumbling roars erupting from her after each snap of her jaws toward any hyena trying to grab one of her cubs. Swatting her large paws to land a hit against their jaws. This went on for quite sometime which brought exhaustion to her body. In one quick motion a hyena locked his jaws into her hind quarters causing her to turn her body to bite him. This was only to be a distraction as another hyena snagged a cub by the back and quickly took off. An echoing roar erupted out of the lioness filled with sorrow as she knew she couldn't chase after her baby. As that would mean death for her other three cubs. Exhausted and heart broken she stayed over her babies only for the stubborn male to jump in for another distraction bite. Before he could even make impact he was slammed right in the jaw by another angry lioness.
It was the pride!
The mothers heart broken roar echoed so loud and so far that it caught the attention of her family, of their family. With scared cackling whines the pack quickly ran with their tails tucked between their legs. Bloody and exhausted she tucked her head down to lick the heads of the cubs as they were being greeted by the family. After a moments rest they all headed back to the safety of home.
Once night greeted the territory, everyone had settled down, snoozing away on the cooling boulders, all except Jack. He couldn't help but toss and turn from the eventful day. Lifting his head from the stone once he saw his mama laying over at the edge of the flat topped boulder gazing up at the star filled sky.
"Mama?" Getting to his feet to go to her, nuzzling his small body against her. "Mama.. He's not coming back... is he?" With a soft sigh she looked down to her baby, her voice as gentle as a dove in flight. "No, Akel is on another journey now. One all of us will take in our own time."
"Do I have to go on it too? I am so tired mama." A light laugh escaped her as she pulled her baby boy between her paws and began to groom him to sleep." I hope you will not take that journey for a long time." Soon the two drifted off into the slumber of the night.
As the months carried on the cubs grew with each passing day. In the blink of an eye they were teenagers. Jack's siblings were all catching onto the hunting lessons but him? Struggling is the nicest word his mother could use. One thing he did have in his favor was his luscious mane and healthy hair growth on other regions of his muscular body. Despite being strong he still had a tummy on him due to the fact that in lion prides the males always ate first so being the third male lion in his pride, he always had plenty to eat.
Posing no threat yet to his father or the other male leading the pride, he is allowed to stay with his family. Who would have thought being lazy would come in handy?
Until that one summer evening that would change how he saw life forever.
Resting along side his sister as they fed on the carcass of a zebra. Jacks ear gave a little wiggle upon hearing an unfamiliar sound slipping through the night air. It sounded like a roar but it had a mix of a cackle in it.
 "What the..?"
At first glance it was just a pack of hyenas but once looking closer Jack saw a mane of a lion? Traveling with a pack of hyenas? In confusion he got to his feet to protect his sister from this very unusual threat.
Breaking through the dark revealed a not so unfamiliar face.
"Akel?" Cackling erupts from the pack at the shocked expression on the lions faces. The two males wouldn't break eye contact for anything. Akel had tons of old healed up wounds covering his body, a matted mane and just enough weight to make him a strong mass.
 "I don't believe it how?what?"
"Surprised brother? Surprised I'm here after all of you abandoned me!" These words erupted out with a roar. "All of you let that hyena run off with me! If it wasn't for my mother I would be long gone."
"Our mother."
"No! My mother! The hyena queen that fought me from that bastards jaws. The one who raised me. Now I'm looking for new territory to expand the pack with better herds and watering holes. You all shouldn't stand in the way unless you are as dumb as I remember,Jack."
Turning his attention away from Akel to his sister, trying to think of the best thing to do in this situation alone but before he could turn back the pack of hyenas had lunged into him. With this surprise attack five fully grown hyenas made Jack lose his footing. When hearing the pain filled roars of his sisters something sparked in him that he never felt before. A deep ground rumbling roar exploded from under the pile of hyenas and before they could react the hyenas got thrown in every direction. This lion once known for how well he could sleep just tossed a hyena into a tree! It didn't take long for the hyenas to run. "Stay away from this family!" Jack demanded as he swatted his large paw right at Akel's face. "They'll turn on you! Just wait! you'll see as I do."
"Get out!!" Roared Jack's last command as he chased his brother away from the territory. Which then brought peace back to the pride for the time being.
The following day was far from peaceful. Jacks father had seen the strong attacks from upon the boulders. The damage done to the hyenas had proven his son is now a threat for leadership.
Climbing the rocks to greet his family to prepare for the morning hunt Jack was met by his father. Sensing something was different he took a few steps back to steady his feet being able to tell what was going on, having seen it happen so many times before. The large lion tried to get his son to back down without harm but after the events of yesterday nothing was going to make him leave his family behind with a deadly threat knocking at their door.
Jack stood up against his father which ended in a fight almost no one wanted to happen. With a father that's bigger than him but obviously older jack over powered him enough for his back paws to slip off the edges of the boulders from which they lived. The pride rushed to the stones edge to see the old male slowly getting to his feet on the ground below, with a noticeable limp the fallen leader drug himself over to a near by tree to rest.
Normally the reigning male would chase off the losing one but in this case Jack wasn't fighting for mating rights, he fought for his place in the pride and his home so he left his father be.
This is where he shall remain, until life has other plans for him. Which it surely shall.
