I have been working on this for something like a week and a half now. I like the way it finally came out though. I got a chance to use some cool instruments too.
The sitar-like thing you're hearing is actually an instrument called a "mountain dulcimer". Despite its foreign appearance it is actually the only instrument known to be fully invented in the united states. http://jmceld.home.mindspring.com/mdulcimr.jpg
The other odd instrument is that thing that sounds a bit like a Mellotron is actually my attempt at just that. It is my crappy radio shack key board open air recorded from my orange guitar amp. I turned down all the mids and highs on the amp and cut half the bands on the EQ to give it a more realistic sound.
This is the third song of the trilogy I have been working on that also includes:

Lyrics are:
looking up at my empty wall
I lay my head back down and call to you
My head just hurts too much today
and I don't have much to say except I'm blue
Ahhhh- I'm blue
Ahhhh- I'm Blue
I pull the strings on my old guitar
I lift myself I laugh at what you do
You eyes of ivory gold reflection
turn in my direction quite confused
Ahhhh- You do
Ahhhh- You do
I'm just here in my lonely room
with images of cheap perfume
the world keeps passing by in shades of gray
giving only second thoughts today
*mellotron solo*
Life passes quickly
there's no time to sit down and enjoy the view
Things just go so wrong for me
it's like every thing I know just isn't true
Ahhh- so true
Ahhh- So true
I'm just here in my lonely room
with images of cheap perfume
the world keeps passing by in shades of gray
only giving second thoughts today
Life passes quickly there's no time to sit down and enjoy the view........
Hope you all like it ^^

I know you're probably not a fan of VSTs (judging by your acoustic sensibility) but there's a free VST that emulates the mellotron extremely well called "Tapeworm."
I think for this song a harmonium would probably work too. Those can be picked up relatively cheap since most people use them for decoration rather than as actual instruments.

Yeah i have it actually. There was a major problem with using it though. The first is that i have it installed on my pc and in order to play it i need to hook my fast track up to it rather than my mac (witch is what I record on). The other issue is that it has a delay that drives me bonkers. I would have prefurd to use it though. The only other option would have been to program the part into cakewalk, which really wouldn't have satisfied me. I think, effect wise, what I ended up using isn't to shabby though.
Thanks:) The recording was mainly done on my Rhode NT1-A with aome of the instrument micing being done with a small diaphragm realistic carderiod condenser. I love both of those mics and they beat the hell out of the dynamic mics I used to use. I appreciate the feedback lyrics:) I tend to not do a lot of rewriting because i think it gives more integrity to the original thought that that inspired them. =^.^=
Thanks :3 I like dulcimers I just wish they were more flexible. They only play in one key so its hard for me to be content with them but they play in that key really well with a very interesting sound. If I had one I would have probably used a sitar here but the dulcimer is definitely a good sound. What company does your cousin work for?
Ukelele is the next instrument on my "To Learn" list. I think it would sound interesting to hear Uke with banjo or fiddle :D
My cousin doesn't work for a company, I can barely remember his name but his last name is either Sloan or Slone. He makes them and sells them at festivals as a home-hobby.
